舞台は架空のカリブ、主人公の少女が水の上を歩いているところから
物語は始まります。その姿を想像しただけですごくドキドキしました。
何故そんなことをしているかという理由にもビックリ！
実在の地名に加えて、タバコ栽培やら歴史などが語られているせいか、
ぐっと現実味を帯びている一方で、魔法や不可解な生き物の存在が語
られています。
このバランス感覚はなかなか面白いし、また登場人物がすごくいい。

「誰がなにをしでかすか、わからない」　久しぶりにそんな楽しみを
持って読めました。当たり前のようで、多くの作品は誰が味方で敵か、
なんとなくわかるものです。しかしこの作品は、良い悪いも、優しさや
ずるさ、どうしようもなさも…一人一人がちゃんと持っています。
そしてそれぞれ違った目的があるせいで、物語を予想不可能な方向へ
運んでいきます。

それから、カイ・マイヤーといえば！ なのでしょうか。私は苦手
なんですが、気持ち悪いものや、死霊などがごくあたりまえに
でてきます…。グロテスクなものが苦手な方はご注意を。
でも悪いものは醜く、良きものが美しいというセオリーに乗っからない
ところが魅力的でもあります。今回は、本当に勘弁してください、と
いいたくなるような生き物がバッチリ主人公たちに同行します。
完結する頃には愛着がわく…?
佐竹さんのイラストは本当に見事。この本は絶対手元に置いておきたいと思いました。

カイ・マイヤーの新作ということで、楽しみにしていた一冊です。
「海賊ジョリーの冒険」というタイトルから「海賊モノか...」と、手元に届きながら、手をつけずにいたのですが、読み始めると止まらなくなりました。
主人公のジョリーは14歳の海賊の女の子。海賊の船長に育てられた孤児で、「海の上を歩く」ことができます。ある日、ジョリーの育ての親である海賊バノンがある船を襲ったことから彼女の冒険が始まります。不思議な化け物、正体不明の敵、そして、自分達を導く敵か味方かもわからない謎の男（サブタイトルにもある「死霊の売人」が彼女達を導くのですが、見るからに怪しすぎます。）、淡い恋ともいえないような想いなどなど、お約束と言えばお約束な要素がテンコ盛りなのですが、するするっと楽しむことができます。２巻もこれから読みまーす。
