スピア,エリザベス・ジョージ
1908~1994。アメリカの児童文学作家。1908年、マサチューセッツ州メルローズに生まれる。スミス・カレッジとボストン大学を卒業したのち、英語教師になる。1936年に結婚。コネティカット州に移り、ふたりの子どもが中学に入ってから本格的に作家として作品を発表しはじめる。第2作の『からすが池の魔女』で、1959年にニューベリー賞を受賞。1962年に『青銅の弓』でふたたび同賞を受賞した。『ビーバー族のしるし』は、ニューベリー賞銀賞のほか、スコット・オデール賞、クリストファー賞などを受賞している。もっとも優れた児童向け歴史物語作家のひとりと評されている

5.0 out of 5 stars サバイバルの方法が生き生きと書かれた、感動の物語, 2009/9/5
これは、アメリカ開拓時代、フロンティアの最先端にある森林の小さな家で、一人で留守番をする白人少年マットの、約半年間の成長を描いた物語だ。

昔からその森に住んでいたインディアンに命を助けられたマットは、彼らから、植物や石を使って獲物をとる罠や道具を作り出す方法、薬草の見分け方、広い森の中で迷わない方法、野生生物との付き合い方などを学んでいく。その様子がとても具体的に描かれていて、自分でも作ってみたい、試してみたいなあとわくわくさせられた。

一方、マットがお返しに英語を教えようとしても、インディアンの少年は学ぼうとしない。書き文字がわからないため、彼らがその後悲惨な運命をたどることは歴史的にわかっているので、読んでいて胸が痛くなった。

また、狡猾な白人の大人と、一見乱暴でもじつは広い心を持ったインディアンとのはざまでマットは思い悩むが、こういう白人少年が大人になり、インディアンへの迫害をやめさせるようにしてくれたら、と祈るような気持ちになってしまった。

コンピュータゲームやケータイも面白いかもしれないが、冒険と友情と生きる知恵がふんだんに盛り込まれた正統派の児童文学も、若い人たちに読み継いでいってほしいと思う。
