4.0 out of 5 stars 「地獄」世界の描写には驚きました, 2004/4/22
第1巻『水の女王』続きです。3巻揃って物語が完結するので最初から読んでいかないと物語世界に入り込めません。スケールの大きな世界が描かれてる分、長い描写の部分や西洋史的背景への言及などがあって、低学年の児童には向かないかもしれません。とはいえ、2巻に入って場面が「地獄」になると俄然テンポが速くなってくるので、けっこう楽しめました。「地獄」の描写がマトリックスのマシン・シティのような雰囲気なのでふと連想したのですが、全編を通じてでてくる「石」は命をもった無機物という点でSFの機械生命のファンタジー的読み替えなのかもしれません。第2巻でも謎は広がるばかりで、結論はエジプトに舞台を移した第3巻までおあずけです。

とにかくおもしろい。
ファンタジーものが、特に児童書が、ここ数年で急増しましたが、この作品は大人向けのように感じます。静かに壮大に話が進んでいくのも魅力です。
暗澹とした世界での生活から、空飛ぶ黒獅子に乗って脱出した少女が次にどこへ向かうのか・・・それはご自分の目で。
続きが楽しみです

２巻を読み終わって、１巻で感じた設定上の違和感（ヴェネチアやエジプト帝国）はいつのまにか気にならなくなっていたことに気づきました。
ありがちな勧善懲悪の範疇におさまらない、各登場人物が自分の意のままにはならない業を抱えて、それでも自分の信じる正義のために行動して行く、含蓄の深い物語です。主人公メルレとゼラフィンの物語がきれいに並行して語られていくので、読んでいて歯がゆさがありません。
ただ２巻の結末がやや「スターウォーズ」展開（勘のいい人はどういう意味かわかっていただけるでしょう）していたのですが、これが最終巻に向けて吉と出るか凶とでるか。
