話の主役は、ウエズレーという名前の少年。町で、いつもひとりだけはみ出しているこの少年が、夏休みの自由研究でやってみようと思いついたのが、自分だけの文明を作ること。誰も見たことのない風変わりな作物を育て、自分で発明した機械で機を織って服を作り、自分だけの時間を決め、新しい遊びを考え出し……。そして、自分の庭を「ウエズランディア」＝（ウエズレーの国）と名づけ、ウエズレー語まで発明しちゃうという、実に壮大な話です。

横長の大判サイズの絵本を開くと、色鮮やかな草花が咲いた庭の風景や、夏空のもとで戦わされる新しいゲームの様子やなんかが、本からわあーっと飛び出すような感じで描かれています。夏休みの、あの解放感に満ちた空気を感じさせてくれるケビン・ホークスの絵が、ポール・フライシュマンの気宇壮大な話としっくり溶け合っているところ。いかしてるなあ、素敵だなあと思いました。絵本に見入りながら、わくわくさせられました。

あと、時折登場するんだけど、頁の隅っこのほうに小さく描かれているので、うっかりすると見逃してしまう「となりのおじさん」が、ちょいといい味出してるぞと、今回読み返してそう思いました。本の表紙にも出ています。右下の三角屋根の家の窓から顔を覗かせている、眼鏡をかけたおじさんなんだけど…。画面では、ちょっと見えないかな。

本の中で、ウエズレー少年の「自由研究」を、垣根越しに双眼鏡で見ていたり、蛇に驚いていたりするこのおじさん、もしかしたらモデルは作者ご本人なのかもしれません。

今まで、様々な絵本を拝読してきた私ですが、
この絵本はそんな中でも群を抜いての最高傑作だと思います。

主人公の強烈な個性、
どの絵本にも類似しない独創性溢れる魅力的なストーリー、
見る人の目を惹き付け離さない豊かで明るい絵。

人によって様々な捕らえ方があるのかもしれませんが、

一人でも多くの人に読んで欲しいし、この面白さを知って欲しい。
絵本に興味の無い方にも５つ星でお勧め出来る、私の中の名作です。

みんなと違いすぎてイジメられているウエズレー少年。
でも自分が「浮いている」事なんか気にもとめない。
ある夏、彼の裏庭に不思議な種子が飛んでくる。
見る見る育った植物から彼が「自分だけの文明」を創り出してしまう物語は一種神話的だ。
　イラストもとても魅力的。
裏庭に出現した「ウエズランディア（ウエズレーの国）」の
巨大な植物たちの間で食べ、遊び、そして眠りたくなってしまう。
　僕もこの不思議な植物から自分だけの食べ物を、
服を、そして時間や文字さえも創りだしてみたい。
　思えば僕にも無限に続くかと思われた夏があった。
カブト虫と蝉の声と森の隠れ家。
あれは僕の「ウエズランディア」だった。

　バーチャルな世界で遊んでいる今時の子供たちも本当はそんな夏を過ごしたいんだろうな。
この絵本を読んだ子供たち、今度は君の「ウエズランディア」を創り出して。
そしてユニークであることを恐れないでほしい。
ユニ（ひとり）であることも。
