舞台は１４世紀のイギリス。少女は物心ついたときは一人で生きていた。ガキを意味するブラットと呼ばれるだけで、何ももっていなかった。家も母親も名前も。

やがて、産婆の家の下働きとしてやとわれる。雨に濡れないようにはなったけれど仕事は大変だし、食事は少し。泣く事も笑う事も知らず、生きるだけでせいいっぱいだった少女が少しずつだが村にとけこんでいく。やがて、自分で｢アリス」と名前をつけ、友を作り、人から必要とされるようになる。最後は自分のなりたいものを見つけ、金持ちの家の豊かな暮らしより一見冷酷な産婆から助産婦の技術を学んでいく道を選ぶ。

１章づつが、短くそれほど厚くない本なのにストーリーにどんどん引き込まれていく。

アメリカで最も優れた児童文学に与えられるニューベリー賞受賞作。
ニューベリー賞はセンスがいい。

すごくさわやかなお話です。さわやかと聞くと綺麗でやさしいものを連想してしまうのですが、このお話はまったく違います。アリスはすごくつらい境遇でありながら、だからこそ人に優しくできる女の子です。「産婆の見習いもできないほどバカなんです。」と落ち込む事もあるけれど、周りの人に支えられながら、つらい境遇をやさしさにして今度は周りの人を支えていく、あきらめないでがんばるアリスの成長があります。

親や教師や環境に不満がでたとき、是非読んでもらいたいです。
アリスは名前すらない女の子でしたが、強くしたたかに選んだ道を進みます。
そう、成長させるのも萎えさせるのも「自分」なのです。
