日本の政策、特に外交や安全保障問題を理解するために必要な過去の歴史的経緯や国際社会の動きについて簡潔にまとめた好著。

日本にとって歴史的ターニングポイントとなった明治維新と第二次世界大戦を中心に、当時の国際社会の様子とその中で日本の指導者が何を考えて何をしたか、それが今日の日本にどうつながっているかが良くわかる。やや情緒的な表現も散見されるが、これは意図的なものだろう。

今日のマスコミ報道は断片的な出来事をワイドショー的に扱うため、大きな歴史の流れが捉えにくい。米軍再編にせよ靖国問題にせよ、事の本質を見落とさないためには、数十年単位での歴史的背景を理解する必要がある。

子ども向けに易しく書かれているけれど、どうして中身はたいしたもの。
福沢諭吉の「学問ノススメ｣から始まって、日本の教育から政治･経済のあり方、アジアの国々やアメリカとの関係まで、数々の「なぜ？」に答えてくれる。
「なぜ勉強するの?｣「なぜ中国は首相の靖国神社参拝に反対するの？」「なぜ日本はアメリカの言いなりなの?」・・・。
学生時代、けっこうまじめに授業を聞いていたけれど、そんなこと一つも教わらなかったぞ、ということばかり。今更ながら、第2次世界大戦が終わってから60年という年月は「たったの」60年であることを痛感。そして、この国がこれからどこへ行くのか、不安を感じてしまった1冊。

　著者は既に「民主と愛国」、「日本人の境界」等で科学的な客観的アプローチをもって「日本」を論じている。その著者がまことに簡潔・手ごろで平易な日本論を著した。

　世間を見れば、つい先日、アメリカの要請で靖国神社は「日米間の戦争歴史修正」を受理したばかりである。こんなことが何故起きるのか、なぜアジアを無視できても、アメリカは無視できず、追従するのか。一体日本とは本当ところどうだったのか、で、これからどうすべきか。そんなことをタイムリーに考えたい人に是非お勧めの本である。
