子どもと読んだが、まだ人生が始まったばかりの息子には
「なんだか良くわからない本」だった。
当然だ。
この本は大人向け。

自分の人生について悩んだり、立ち止まったり
振り返ったりしている人に向けて
やさしく諭してくれる本だ。
生きている間の大方は、悲しみやあきらめなどの連続で、
その合間に小さな希望や喜びが、ぽっぽっと灯るのだ。
だから　多くを望まず、ただ自分の歩調で歩み続ける。

重ねられた　複雑でやわらかい色の絵が　胸に染みてくる。

「そう喜びや悲しみ　浮き浮きした気持ちや　寂しい気持ち
　怒りやあきらめ　みんな入った　ユトリロの白　
　世の中の濁りも美しさもはかなさも」

　ペンキ職人のしんやは、お客の望む色にペンキをぬることができませんでした。それで、やっぱりペンキ職人でフランスへ行ってなくなった父さんの墓を訪ねて船に乗りました・・・。

　ペンキをぬることが人の心を癒す。そんなペンキ職人のしんやの一生が、淡々と語られます。絵本であることのすばらしさが絵の中にあります。ペンキの色の中にさまざまな人生がこめられているのです。

なぜかしっくりと馴染む。
「しんや」の目の静けさと物悲しさと、ひとつのハケが
幸福な色彩と平凡な人生を描く本だ。
冷静な文調がそれをつづる。
音無く咲く花みたいな、挿絵がまたしっくりと馴染むんだな。
