これは子供でも大人でも楽しめる一冊だと思います。子供にとっては見知らぬ世界での冒険、大人にとっては家族、血というものが持つあたたかなもの、懐かしいものを感じるが故に。

照美は弟を失ってから、母の愛情が自分に向いていないことをうすうす感じていた。そして、昔からいわくつきの洋風屋敷、バーンズ屋敷を訪れる。だれもいないはずなのに、感じる何かの気配。やがて照美は大鏡の前である呪文を口にする・・・「Tell Me」

照美は不思議な世界へ迷い込む。遠くで礼砲が鳴る、まるで死を待つかのような世界。スナフキンに似た青年、スナフとともに世界を巡るうち、照美はこの世界の秘密、スナフの正体、そして家族のぬくもりを知る・・・。

ただきれいなだけではない、恐ろしさを持った異世界が魅力的。底辺に確かな家族への想いがながれる作品。

誰にでも触れられたくない過去がひとつは傷となって残っているはずです。それを無理に薬をつけて直そうとしたり、鎧を着てごまかしたりしないでいいと、この本のなかでとあるおばあさんが言っています。
この本の中心は多分誰もがもっている「傷」から始まり、そして「傷」で終わっていると私は思います。

その傷こそが「裏庭（バックヤード）」であって、誰にも見えぬよう隠され、誰もがもっているものなのでしょう。それを利用して、自分自身をどう成長させるかはその人しだいです。
傷に振り回されずに、傷をうまく育てて、自分だけの人生の庭をつくっていくことについてきっとこの本は教えてくれるでしょう。

現代で安易に否定されがちなことの本質が
えがかれていると感じました。

つい、遠ざけたり嫌ったりしてしまう
悲しみや怒りも「素直に受け入れていいのだ」
そんなふうに思えるようになりました。
