ほかのレビュアーの方々もおっしゃっていますが、政治「学」の全体像を「一冊で」理解しようと思えば、この一冊が（少なくとも消去法的に）ベストだと思います。第一線の研究者たちが分担執筆する、という長所がよく出ています。

また、各章末には、関連の基本文献が紹介されています（実証政治学に関してきちんと勉強したい人は、アルマなどの各論教科書のほか、東大出版会の「現代政治学叢書」「社会科学の理論とモデル」シリーズにも目を通してください）。

政治学教科書を名乗るもののなかには、「わかりやすい教養書」という名のもとに無内容な弁舌をふるうものや、実績作りのアリバイとして出されるものもありますが、本書はそれらとは全く異なっており、安心して人に勧めることができます。

ひとつ難点をいえば、本書は全体を「本人・代理人」の観点からまとめたとのことですが、そのようには見えません。個々の章の独立性が高く、どこから読み進めてもわかりやすく面白い、という長所に伴う代償かもしれませんが。

また、80年代以降の政治学復興における最大の意義が「さまざまなアプローチ・理論の並存と、それらの間の公開的競争」の肯定にあると考えれば、「本人・代理人」にとどまらずいくつかの視点を設定してもよかったのではないかと思います。

なお、本書は、日本政治・世界政治についてただ単にファクトを知りたいのだという人には不向きです。むしろ本書は、様々なファクトをどう整理・理解するかに重点を置いています。

有斐閣の「アルマ」シリーズから、政治学の個別テーマについて、平易な叙述で最新の議論をコンパクトに纏めた良書が幾つか出版されている。本書は、その「アルマ」シリーズの著者らを執筆陣の中心に据えた、政治学のほぼ全領域をカバーする、最新の本格的教科書である。本書も「アルマ」の良さを踏襲し、最新のハイレベルな議論を平易な叙述で纏めている。恐らく、本書を超える教科書はしばらく出ないだろう。

本書の帯に「大学四年間、手元に置いてくりかえしお読み下さい」とのコピーがあるが、確かに、本書の内容をきちんと消化できるレベルに達したら「政治学科卒」を名乗れると思う。これまでの政治学には、全領域をカバーする独学可能なスタンダードテキストが存在しなかった（佐々木毅『政治学講義』は学部レベルの独学にはキビシイ）。が、今後は本書がその役割を担うと思う。公務員試験など各種試験対策にも重宝するだろう。
政治に興味が有る一般市民の独学用としても使える。結構なページ数だが、噛み砕いた文章だし一気に読めると思う。あやふやな知識で適当なことを書き散らす、「政治評論家」とか「論壇人」とか言う肩書の人たちの本を読むより、何倍もためになるだろう。

要するに、用途は問わず「これ一冊で政治学の全体像を把握したい」というなら、本書を選択するのがベストだ。

個人的には、政治学にスタンダードを求めてはいけないと思うが、そうした立場を離れて、「大学で教わる政治学」の使いやすい教科書として見てみれば、非常によく仕上がっていると思う。
トピックについても、古典的なものから、最新のものまで、かなり広範にカバーしており、作り手の意欲も伝わってくる。
ただ、ある程度、政治学の知識がある読者なら問題ないが、初学者は、この一冊を読んだだけで、これが全てだと勘違いしてしまわないように気をつけて欲しい。
