中国書道史を十巻にまとめたシリーズの最終巻です。文房具ですから、硯、墨、筆、紙の歴史です。新出土史料編と伝世品鑑賞編に分かれています。前半３分の２を占める新出土史料編が他の本にはない貴重な集成です。原始時代から元時代ぐらいまでの地下からの発掘品を、1991年ぐらいまでの発掘報告をもとに出きる限り集めてあります。これによって文献や伝承だけでなく、実証的に漢・魏晋南北朝・唐・宋・元の文房具の歴史を概観しています。従来のイメージがまったく変わったものも少なくありません。従来考えられていた「宋時代の硯」は、宋時代の一般的な様式ではないということがわかります。伝承の誤りでしょうか？　三国志の英雄たちが使った密書・手紙の類も現在とはかなりかけ離れた形をしていたらし!いことがわかります。
図版で質の悪いものがみうけられますが、これは中華人民共和国で雑誌に発表された写真が、1991年時点ではそれしかなかったためです。やむをえません。
