見ていて、鳥との出会いが楽しみになる本です。

ほぼ実物大の野鳥は、コンパクトに描かれた図鑑を
見慣れている身にはかなり新鮮。本物はこんなに
デカイんだ！？と思う鳥もいっぱいいて、ふだん
どれだけ鳥と距離を保ってみているかを実感します。

著者は、北海道の自然に魅せられ、生まれ育った東京
から、北海道に移住。真剣に北海道の自然に向き合って
いる写真家で、「ｆａｕｒａ」という良質な季刊誌も作って
いる人です。
野鳥は、誰が撮っても一緒ということはなく、撮る人の
優しい目線がそのまま写真に残ります。
著者のほかの本同様この本のどの写真も、生きいきと
可愛い仕草の鳥ばかりで、見ていて幸せになります。

東京都では、環境汚染につながるような都立の公園
での大量の餌やりに対して、やっと条例ができるそう
です。家庭での餌台も近隣の住民とのトラブルを招き
かねないものを時々見かけます。
この本は、ただ「庭に鳥を呼びましょう！」という
キレイ事だけでなく、キチンと、餌台の設置時期や、
清潔にしなければ起こり得るリスクなどにもページを
さいているところに、とても好感をもてました。
野鳥を大事と思う気持ちが空回りして、隣近所に「敵」
を作ってしまうことは結局は野鳥のためにならない事を
理解させてくれます。

唯一、大型の鳥に添えられている数字が実物への
「縮小率」ではなく、掲載写真に対しての「拡大率」
のほうが大きさを理解しやすかったのでは？と残念
に思いました。

　スズメとカラス、ツバメくらいは分かる。その他の鳥を見つけても、なんという鳥か分からない場合が多い。本書は庭に訪れる野鳥５８種類が紹介されている。我々が身近に見つけた野鳥は、おそらくここに出ている鳥たちに含まれているにちがいない。

　農耕地に必ず見られる鳥として、古くからよく知られるムクドリ。しかし、身近な割にはあまり人気はない。全身すすけたような色合いで、鳴き声ま騒がしいからだろう。語源は「むくつけき鳥」であるという説もあり、江戸時代には出稼ぎに来た田舎者のことを「椋鳥」と呼んであざけったと言う。

　全国的に一年中、庭先でもよく見られるヒヨドリ。最もポピュラーな野鳥の中のひとつと言える。もともと「漂鳥」であったが、３０数年前突如、夏も人里に出没するようになった。ピーヨピーヨと甲高い声で鳴く。

　獲物を枝などに刺しておく「はやにえ」で知られるモズ。秋の里山で、棒くいの先にとまった一羽のモズ。長い尾をゆっくり回しながら獲物を物色している。狙うのは大型の昆虫やトカゲなど地上をはう生き物である。

　初心者向けの図鑑などでは「山野の鳥」「水辺の鳥」などという配置になっている場合がある。本書では「庭で観察しやすい鳥」をまとめている。気品に満ちた庭の翁ジョウビタキ。遠慮深イ冬の客人ツグミ。声で春ワ告げるウグイス。ネクタイをしたバードテーブルの常連シジュウガラ。甘い蜜ガお気に入りの仲よしたちメジロ。

　野鳥の来る庭作りにする「庭作りのポイント」…その土地に生える植物を植える・水場の工夫・ベランダに鳥たちを呼ぶ・鳥が庭先つくる・おすすめ木の実図鑑が示されている。
　　
　原寸大の原色の野鳥の魅力あふれる本である。

原寸大の写真、ということで手にとりました。鳥類写真家として有名な大橋弘一さんの写真で、よく見かける鳥たちがいっぱい詰まっていました。庭に来る鳥からまず知ろう、というコンセプトもとてもいい。で、最初がスズメなのが、ますます素晴らしい！

鳥の解説の文句も絶妙。たとえば、ハシブトガラスは（でっかい！）、「黒衣をまとった賢者たち」。都市部のあちこちにいるのに知名度の低いままのカワラヒワは、「黄金の翼をもつ歌姫」。今度、うちのひまわりを食べにきたら、ヒワちゃんに教えてあげよう。子どもから大人まで、とにかく大必携の素晴らしい、素晴らしい本。こんな本を作ってくれて、どうもありがとう！と言いたくなります。
