　一冊にまとめるには大変な分量の事柄を見事にまとめ上げた作者の力量の高さがまず印象に残ります。並外れて個性的で魅力的な人物たちを一人一人浮き彫りにし、個々のエピソードの是非を超えて彼女たち一人一人を好きにならずにいられなくさせる文章の力、ともすればエピソードの強さに引きずられて羅列に終わりかねない記述をそうはさせなかった構成の力、ともに大変素晴らしいものでした。男性の書き方がやや偏っていてステレオタイプ的であったのが少し気になりますが、強く生きざるを得なかった女性クライマーたちの苦しみを浮き彫りにするにはそれもやむをえなかったかとも思います。山岳ものというと、とかく、山への過剰な思い入れがなかったり共感できないとなかなか読みづらいものも多いのですが、この本はそのようなことはなく、一冊の良著として読了できます。大変な長編ですが、読み終わるのが惜しい思いのした一冊でした。

世界第2位の高峰、K2に登頂した5人の女性クライマーの人生を追ったノンフィクションです。

K2の登頂成功率はエベレストの10%程度、そのうち約25%が安全に降下できないという難峰（もちろんK2よりも難度の高い山は他にもありますが）であるため、「女性クライマー5人が（執筆時点で）すべて死んでいる」という筆者の興味、思い入れは「因縁」というよりも確率の問題だと思います。これは筆者も認めています。ただ、同性として聞いてみたい対象がすべて消えてなくなっていることが、筆者の執念をかき立てたのでしょう。

登頂に際して5人がぶつかる問題は女性だけの問題というより、クライマー全体に当てはまると思います。個人の資質、観点、異性がパーティーに混じることによってぶつかる問題などがときに冷徹に、感情的に描かれます。本人または知人（同じパーティーでも、必ずしも友情が芽生えないのでこのレベル）の遭難、遺体の発見や回収などは山岳小説などではやや美化されがちなきらいがありますが、「高山は戦場よりすごいかも！」と感じさせる濃い描写です。

翻訳については、英語のジャーナリズム系文体の訳しにくさもあって、滑らかさに苦労されたように思います。ですが、作品のボリューム、内容の濃さを考えてこの評価としました。

Ｋ２登頂の女性登山家の強さと弱さと意外な一面を描く。
登頂したんだからスーパーウーマンには違いないんだけど、
結局皆が死んでしまっている。
登山家とはそういう運命なのか？
それとも女性登山家特有の弱さなのか？

女性の視点から硬派なテーマを
愛や家族、また母親･妻としての部分も絡めて軟らかく描いている。

読んでいて筆者の同姓としての嫉妬のようなものが見え隠れしたような・・・。
そして・・・、
なんとなくＫ２征服する女性サミッタｰに不幸が続く事を望んでいるような・・・。

女性登山家の環境・資質・ライバル心・等々。
筆者もまた同じように闘い彼女等にライバル心を持っている。

山岳小説としてだけでない楽しみ方がある。
