本書は、数あるメスナーの著書とは趣を異にして、過去の文献を徹底的に渉猟することによって転落体験の克明な分析をしています。その結果、これまでの医学常識を覆す非常に重要な所見が得られました。それは、次の部分です。

「重い事故よりも軽い事故のほうが精神的外傷が大きく、その体験も、大きい事故の場合より重いと結論していいだろう。〔中略〕ショックの強さはこのように致死率を意識するかどうかにかかっており、しかもショックの強さは転落の重さに反比例するのである。死の可能性が大きければ大きいほど、それがわれわれの心性に及ぼす作用は軽い」

　これは、精神医学のＰＴＳＤ理論とは逆になっており、一般常識とも正反対の結論です。これも、メスナーの人間の本質探究のひとつの重要な成果と言えるでしょう。

　他者の体験を扱っている本書でも、メスナーという人物の傑出性がはっきりとわかります。傑出した人物は、何を書いても傑出しているのでしょう。山と渓谷社は、本書の再刊を検討していたことがあったのですが、現在の出版状況から、取りやめになったそうです。残念なことです。
