　人は命をかけて物事を成し遂げようとするときに、超人的な能力を発揮でき、生きている実感を得るのだろうか。そのような境地に達している彼は、最も幸せな人生を過ごしていると思う。
　残念ながらとても真似はできないが、この本により、彼をもっと知りたい、応援したいという気持ちになった。凍もなかなか良いが、こちらのほうが、より山野井氏の肉声が伝わるので、その分感動がある。沢木さんはこの本を読まずに凍を書ければよかったのに。凍は星４つ半、この本は星７つ分の価値があります。

世界最強の単独登山家、山野井泰史さんの自著。
ヒマラヤ・カラコルム山脈でのクライミングを中心に７章に分けて、その模様と心境を載せている。
専門用語が多いので、クライミングの知識が少ない人が読むと苦労するかもしれないけれど、山野井さんの山に対する想いは通じると思う。

日本では「目立たず世間に出てこない登山家」世界では「他の誰も到達し得ない稀代な人」という扱い。
もともと山野井さんが目立ちたくない人だから仕方ないんだけど、
日本はこういう人をもっと取り上げた方が良い。
イチローや北野武に匹敵する、途方もない人なのだから。

クライマー山野井泰史による自伝的な登山記録。
著者は、単独で数多くの危険な岩壁や高所登山を実践しており、その業績は、国内よりもむしろ海外において高く評価されている。
文章は上手いとは言えないのだが、内容だけでなく文章のスタイルも、死と隣り合わせの登山を繰り返してきた著者ならではのものであり、読み始めるとぐいぐいと中身に引き込まれてしまう。
また、登山記録の間に挿入されている生活、妻、友人などについての短いエッセイは、超人とも思える著者の人生観や日常生活をうかがい知ることができ、興味深い。
