高いし重いですが、それに見合った価値は必ずあります。特にダイビングをされる方には強くおすすめします。

ハンドブック的な図鑑は持ち運びに便利ですが、掲載されている種数が少ないため、海で見かけた魚を図鑑で見つけられるとは限りません。
載ってたらラッキ~という感じですし、載ってる中で一番似てるからと別の魚と間違って覚えてしまいがちです。

一方この図鑑ならば載っているという前提で探すことができます。
類似種との区別の仕方もよく書かれているので、魚を観察する眼を養うこともできると思います。
もちろん載っていない種もありますが、この図鑑に載ってない魚を見つけたらお~これはレアものなんだなと嬉しくなるかも。

また基本的に水中での生態写真であるという点も重要です。
魚は陸に上げると体色が大きく変わるものもいるので、標本の写真を使った図鑑だとデジカメで撮った魚を同定するのはけっこう難しいです。
その点本書では魚だけでなく生息場所の地形などが写っていることも多く、同定の手助けになります。

というわけで、魚に興味のあるダイバーの方なら買って後悔はしない一冊だと思います。

　題名の表す通り、日本の海水魚についてはこれ一冊でほとんどO.K.です。2400種を網羅し、それぞれの魚の写真も水中でのもの（実際にダイビングで見られる姿）であり、とにかく美麗であります。しかしながら、内容が充実しているあまり、本のサイズと重量もかなりあります。釣り人やダイバーが、ちょっと携帯して行こうかという気分には正直なりませんが、これは仕方の無いことでしょう。
　ですから、家で写真集的に眺めて楽しむか、釣ったりダイビングで遭遇若しくは撮影した魚の確認用としては最高であると判断致します。

水中と標本写真を使って日本近海に見られる殆どの種を紹介した図鑑です。
書籍としては決して安くありませんが、写真の量や解説の品位を考慮すれば十分満足のいくものです。

おおむね良い本であると思いますが少し残念なところを以下に書きます。
・水中写真の中には非常に不鮮明なものも見受けられる。
・標本を使った写真は（標本が）退色しているものが多く、生きた魚と比べにくい。
・生態写真の多い種を重点的に解説する編集方針なので、重要な食用魚でありながら３行ほどの簡易な解説に終わっている種がある。
