山川出版社の県史シリーズの１３。東京都の歴史。
万人に理解しやすい中庸な内容に定評がある同シリーズらしく、
東京都編についても安定した編集となっている。

日本の首都であり、世界的にも代表的な巨大経済都市の一つ。
そんな現在の東京の基盤ができるまでの変遷に触れて見て欲しい。
広大な関東平野の自然を手なづけるまでのプロセスには多くの紆余曲折がある。
江戸や東京の区分についてもさまざまな解釈や変遷があり、
明治新政府になってすぐに今の”東京”が確定したわけではない。
横浜開港場と絹を通じて強い結びつきのあった三多摩地方が、
かつては神奈川県に編入されていたことなどは、一般の人にとっては意外な事実であると思う。

わずか400年。水浸しの葦原茂る湿地は、林立するビルとなり、
武蔵野の雑木林は開かれて、隙間もない住宅地となった。
こういった意外で素朴な驚きは、市町村合併や”道州制”議論の行われる現在、
本来都市や自治体とは、元あった自然の風景はどういったものか？
という事をスタートに立ち帰って考える良い契機になると思う。

すでに全図書館の定番でもある山川出版社県史シリーズが25年ぶりに全面書き下ろしとして改版、

本書は1997年初版、5人の執筆者による貝塚時代から1990年代までの通史、索引・年表・沿革表・祭礼行事・参考文献にカラーグラビア、図版多数収録、要所要所に1ページのコラムもあり、資料としても、そして通読も拾い読みも可能な便利な本、

一冊の本として文体の統一ははかられたおもわれとても読みやすい、もちろん江戸時代にはページの半数以上が費やされており、面白く読み応えもあります、
