エリザベス・ボウエンは、イギリスを代表する女流作家でありながら、その作品は日本ではまだほとんど紹介されていない。本書は著者の作品世界を堪能できる20篇を収録するオリジナル短編集だ。著者については巻末に丁寧な解説がついている。

本書の短編どれをとっても、少ないページ数の中で、英国ののどかな田園風景、格式のあるお屋敷や贅沢な子供部屋、優雅なティータイムなど情景描写が豊かで驚く。英国らしい風景が展開される。少女が登場する物語が多いのもこの著者の特徴だろう。少女たちがもつ無邪気な残酷さや、好奇心いっぱいの視点が物語の中で重要な役割をになっている。感情の爆発などもリアルすぎて怖いくらい。同時に大人の女性の描き方も最高に巧い。有能なお針子やガヴァネス（女性の家庭教師）など、時代を先取って外に飛び出していく女性たちの姿が生き生きと描かれる。でも彼女たちの有能さに安心してはいけない。ボウエンの短編の中ではいつも、彼女たちは秘密を抱えていたり、恐ろしい事実を目撃したりするのだから。

読みながら、ダフネ・デュ・モーリアやパトリシア・ハイスミス、クリスチアナ・ブランドなどを思い出した。冷徹なまでに鋭い観察眼と、物語の語りの巧さで「意地悪」で意外なブラックな後味をもつ短編ばかりだ。20篇収録されているので、じっくり楽しめる。お買い得な本だと思う。
