とにもかくにも面白い。いまさら一読者がお勧めするまでもないかもしれないが、ぜひ多くの読者に読んでほしい一冊。やがて到来する２１世紀には、この２０世紀とは一体いかなる時代であったのかを問い直す動きが盛んになるであろう。写真、自動車、そして世界戦争。大量生産、大量消費、無制限の複製……。第一次世界大戦から今日までの時空を、三人の農夫の写真と三つの物語が、結びつける。 難しい理論、簡単な恋愛。何でもありのこの物語は、まさに２０世紀そのものである。

ある意味で「歴史認識」による連環を描いている。「三人の農夫」を指す愚意。求め合う表と裏、観る物と観られる者の「同時性」の追求。その間の空間で、その間で揺れ動く歴史を綴る人間達のエネルギーが力や美と同義とされる事を描き、その表現者である「虚構」を定めて突き進む人間と「惰性」で生きる人間と「観察者」の三者対比。「古びた歴史から彼らは遅ればせの現在を構築するしかない。しかし・・」（文中より）しかし非合理性の探求とは結局、合理の中に押し込む事「あなた私が片腕を無くした事を知ってる？なのにいまだにね、ここにあるのを感じるのよ。」（文中より）。相反を虚構に見出す人物、幻の女を探す人物、現代人は誰の後継者足りえるのか。全体の進む道は一つの枠組みの中の妄執に牽引され集合意識は「暴力」へも向かう。進化が終端速度に達して引き金点に到達し、同時性と自己反映性を獲得し、先を行く虚構に自らが追いついた時に弾ける衝動が戦争などの爆発を呼んだ。それは相互に影響しあう個々の事象の「責任」でもあり、傍観者も当事者も同じである。そして自己反映に至る事象の認識は全て合理による事後処理である。勝者の押し付けは全体に対する反映作業であっても、無理矢理押し付けられる側には簡単に受け入れられない。「ジャックの母親は豆を喜ばない」（文中より）。人の中で一致する異なった「時間」の同時性、同時性が力を得るその典型の一つとして２０世紀の顔の一つとも言える「自動車」。それを産んだ能率、合理主義の大量生産、ベルト式オートメーション労働が確立された機械文明＝人間機械化。一方で現実主義と理想主義が混在もしている。個人と全体は繋がっている。しかしその間は近すぎても見えないし遠すぎても意味を成さない。「身代わり」を作る事は、双方相互に共振して初めて全体を為す。逃げる置き換えは個人の中だけで終わってしまう。そして蓋を開けずに中を見る事は出来ない。「悦びと共感こそ責任への第一歩であり、公的な悲劇が常に個人的癒しによって中断されるからこそ、悦びも共感も生じてくるのではないか」（文中より）。ＡからＢへ行く時間を飛躍的に縮めた自動車、現代の大量生産。この全体性はエゴに人を導く事にも繋がるし、共産的な物にも繋がる。単に結果だけなら「全体」に、その失われた経過を重視すると「個人」達の生きる姿に当て嵌められる。大量生産による「複製」は「置き換え」であり身代わり行為。「現実」を「非現実」で有機物を無機物で表す欲求が「思い込み」となる。個人と全体が織り成す粉飾の虚構。その間で大衆はただ自らの悲喜を現しながら自らを現時間に刻み付けるだけ。個人と集合による全体はそれぞれが過去、現在、未来という連環の中で自らを再構築し続ける。「現代の人の記憶に浄化は伴わず、歴史に認識は伴わない」（文中より）。その都度生まれる余剰苦痛は貯蓄財を消費する事により還元されまた繰り返す。「過去」と「現在」は連環し同時性の元で、「観察者」も「被写体」も相互に見つめ合い人は生きる。決して贖罪の道では無い。上下は無い、並行しているのだ。現在を虚妄で突き進み、平行を失って過去の直線に触れ、交わる点が現在の我々の生きる喜びであり悲しみであり、さらに突き抜けるとまた均衡を取り戻して二つの線は並行となる。その繰り返しの中で人は今を生きるだけ。
