●本書は、2005年にアメリカで出版された「Glowing Genes」の邦訳である。みずからもGFP（緑色蛍光タンパク質）の研究者である著者マーク・ジマーが、「GFPの発見が生命科学の進展にどれほど革命的な役割を果たしたのか」を分かりやすく紹介している。

●特筆すべきは、原書がGFPに対してノーベル化学賞が授与される2008年より以前に書かれたという点であろう（ただし、翻訳はノーベル賞のあと）。

●この本を読むと、３人の受賞者（下村脩、チャルフィー、チェン）がGFPの発見とその後の開発にきわめて重要な貢献をしたことが納得される。また、功労者はこの３人だけではなかったことも知ることができる。ノーベル賞以降に書かれたものでは、どうしても授賞者３人だけにスポットが当たってしまうので、その意味で本書の視点は重要であると思われた。

●ただし、ページの半分以上は「GFPが現在どのような研究の場面で利用されているのか」をトピックス的に紹介する文章に当てられているので、通読するには少々たいくつだ。しかし、索引と文献リストが巻末に付いているので、ノーベル賞に関する資料としての価値は高い。

●内容（とくに生物発光に関する部分）に多少の間違いが見られるが、それらのほとんどは原著の誤りである。とはいえ、ウミホタルが軟体動物の一種と書かれていたり（正しくは甲殻類）、メダカの写真がゼブラフィッシュと説明されていたり、どちらも日本ではなじみの深い生物だけに翻訳の際に修正があって欲しかったところだ。
