本書は計測・通信・情報処理・医療・加工など非常に広範な領域で必要とされる光学という学問を基礎(1、2巻)から大学院レベル(3巻)までを図版や写真を多用してわかりやすく述べたものである。教育に主眼をおきつつも記述の仕方を現代的にし、最新の内容を盛り込むという基本方針は前の第3版(原書)を踏襲している。この版にはいくつかの目的がある。一つは、光学のほぼすべての場面において原子の散乱が演じる中心的役割を理解させること、一つは、広い見通しの得られるフーリエ理論による考え方をできるだけ早く示すこと、一つは、根底にある光の量子力学的性質を明らかにしてゆくことである。章末には豊富な練習問題を用意し、巻末に解答を付けたが、教育上の配慮から一部は省いてある。

光学，光エレクトロニクスにかかわる人は必携だと思います．
理工系学部学生でも読めると思います．特に，図が豊富でわかりやすいです．
私自身も学部ときこの本に出会い，感激しました．

訳も一部でているようですが、後半部分はまだ訳されていないよなので、原書をお勧めします。教科書として使用する場合は5つ星でしょう。

資料を用意するにはかなり手間がかかるだろうと思われる、実験の図など分かりやすく配置されているとおもいます。大学1,2年くらいの数学ができれば、くまなく読めるのではないでしょうか。

ここ数年の話題もあることもよいと思います。たとえば、スペースシャトルでの測量など話題になった内容など好感が持てます。

光学の基礎知識をみっちりと手に入れるにはオススメです。必要なところだけを読むだけというのでも、良いと思いますよ。これ以上を教科書に望むのは無理という感じで、レベル的にはマスターの学生くらいにとってもいいのではないでしょうか。
新しい素材を取り入れてあるから、古くさくもまったく感じないのもいいですよ。
