このような素晴らしい本を書いてくれた著者に感謝します。
5歳の頃に突然、耳が聞こえなくなった著者の自伝です。
1988年、米国ギャローデット大学に世界最初の聴覚障害を持つ学長が就任する、歴史的な話が現場にいた当事者によって綴られています。

一時「聾者はまだ健聴者の世界で機能する準備が整っていない」と健常者の学長が選ばれた事に対して、「学長にろう者を」と要求する抗議運動(DPN)に発展していき、広がっていく様子は劇的なものです。
（1990年に「障害をもつアメリカ人法」（The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990、略称ADA）が制定されたことも切り離せません。）

日本において障害者に対してどこかに否定的な風潮があることを身をもって実感しているだけに、米国にも負けていられないなと実感させられました。
ぜひとも一般の方にも読んで頂きたい本です。
お値段は高めですが、それ以上の価値があります！
