1937年東京生まれ。東京大学文学部哲学科卒業。千葉大学教授などを経て現在、京都大学文学部教授。専門は生命倫理学、環境倫理学、応用倫理学。93年、「哲学の使命」(未来社)で和辻哲郎文化賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

環境倫理学とは、著者によると３つの基本的主張があると言う。1自然の生存権の問題、2世代間倫理の問題、3地球全体主義、である。これらは、私に全く新しい視点を与えてくれた。1は新しく、そして古いアニミズムの考え方を、2は未来の人々のために私達に「今」何ができるかということを、3は思考の枠を地球というものにまで広げてくれた。

ローマクラブの「成長の限界」の発表から今まで、環境問題はずっとクローズアップされてきたし、今後もそれは変わらないだろう。しかし、今ではボランティアや個人などと活動主体も活動内容も固定化されてきた。何より「地球のため」という大義名分はそれだけで正義であったが、その内容には絶対的な正義であるが故の説得のなさもあったような気がする。だからこそ、本書が説く環境倫理学は私達に環境問題の本質までをも問いかけてくる。そして環境倫理学は環境問題だけではなく、今までの近代主義の是非までも揺るがしていることも筆者は言及している。

環境問題を自然科学の立場から扱った書物はたくさんあるが、それが何故問題なのかを考えうるためには、倫理学の知見は非常に有用であり、そういう意味でよくまとまった本だと思う。
ただ、p.53で、森林保有の多い（植林が多いではなく）国は化石エネルギーを多くしてもよいとか、p.212のバイオマスは、地球温暖化の問題を視野に入れたとき、なんら問題の解決に
ならないとか、著者は本当に自然科学的な意味での環境問題やカーボンニュートラルの概念を理解しているのか疑問に思いました。そこで星一つ減らして星４つとしました。
