データの捏造や論文の盗用は，誰から見ても不正行為である。では，助言や技術協力をしただけの人を著者に含めることはどうだろうか？本書によれば，これはギフト・オーサーシップと呼ばれ，倫理上問題のある行為である。そのような意識のない研究者は多いのではないだろうか。著者は捏造・偽造・盗用などの不正行為がオーサーシップの誤用と結びついていると述べ，特に一章を設けて，オーサーシップの誤用を糾している。科学スキャンダルの大げさな報道とは無縁と思っている研究者たちは，普段の研究活動の中に不正行為が含まれていないかと自己点検する必要があるのではないだろうか。

著書において、海外の研究不正行為の事例として、フィッシャー事件、ピアース事件、ヘルマン・ブラッハ事件が上げられており、それぞれの事件における各国の対応の記述など大変参考になった。我が日本においても、アニリール・セルカン事件（http://blog.goo.ne.jp/11jigen）という、「業績として上げている論文がそもそも存在しない」、「著者名が書き換えられている」など、レフェリーシステム（査読・審査システム）を巧みに逃れる不正行為が起こっており、我が国の対応が注目される。
