　日本社会における格差が最近、話題である。といったわけで、本書を手にした。

　格差を話題にする本書は、両極端に位置する人々の現状について語る。特に、貧困層・困窮者の話題が多く読んでいて暗い気持ちになることも多かった。

　しかし、どのような対策を講じるべきかの提言や、海外の格差解消の取り組みも紹介されており、非常に参考になった。特に、正社員とパートや派遣社員との間に給与差別や待遇差別を認めないオランダの法制は有効な対策ではないだろうか。

　いざなぎ景気を超える景気拡大ということが言われるが、それは非正社員や非熟練労働者に荷重の負担を強いた結果であることがよく分かる。不当に長時間・低賃金で働かされている彼らは本当に疲弊し切っている。

　彼らを踏みつぶして、その上に成り立つ景気回復。一部の上位企業だけの業績が上がっただけの経済成長には疑問が生じる。

　新聞の連載記事を元にした本書は、文章も読みやすく、豊富な事例に満ちており、大変おすすめである。

　本書の一部表記に誤りがあったが、それもそれほどに気にはならない。

4.0 out of 5 stars 格差状況をコンパクトにまとめた, 2006/10/1
「規制緩和は雇用を創出した。パートと無職とどちらがいいか？」格差容認派の典型的なコメントとしての宮内義彦の言葉である。この問いには「多くの人々がパートか無職かどちらかしか選べない社会を望んでいるとは思えない」と突っ込みたいところだが、本書での宮内へのインタビューはそんな応酬とはなっていない。このあたりに象徴される一抹のくいたりなさがあるし、海外の事例取材も背景の事情がわかりづらく、やや表面的なきらいがある。ただ格差の底辺だけでなく、上澄み部分としての富裕層や、源流ともいえる規制改革の経緯にも言及し全体像を浮かび上がらせているところは気の利いた構成といえるだろう。

　前半の日本のワーキングプアと称される、労働現場については、本書ならずとも目にした読者は多かろうと思う。　週刊誌でなく「毎日新聞」としての強みが出ているのは、宮内・竹中両氏へのインタビュー。両氏ともここ１０年ほど“規制緩和”を推し進めることで利益を得てきたのだが、詭弁にもならぬ言い訳を述べている。　
　規制緩和や小泉改革に以前から警鐘を鳴らしていた、内橋克人や金子勝などに耳を貸さず、熱狂的または無批判に受け入れてきたツケが、今回っていているのだと言うしかない。
　「海外の現場から」と題した、格差是正・民営化から官営へ・過疎地への再分配など、失敗した政策を更に他国へ押しつける国アメリカでなく、住民のために努力している国や地域にもっとスペースを割いて欲しかった。
