「白塗りの娼婦ハマのメリー」「根岸外国人墓地」「ゴールデンカップス」の三つのキーワードから戦後横浜の裏面史を描いたノンフィクション。綿密な取材に基づいたノンフィクションでありながら三つのキーワードを軸にした巧みな構成は、乱歩賞作家として数多くのミステリーを生み出した著者ならではの、最後まで興味深く惹きつけてやまない作品に仕上がっている。横浜の戦後史をきちんと辿りながら半ば伝説化しているメリーさんやカップスの実像に迫り、根岸外国人墓地の隠された史実をめぐる市当局との顛末を、著者は戦後生まれの一人としての視点で、誰が読んでも非常に理解しやすく書きあげている。エディ藩はじめカップスのメンバーへの取材の様子はまるでその場に同席しているように感じられ読まずにはいられない。著者があえて「メリーさんの子供たち」と表現する戦後の横浜に誕生した混血児たちへのメッセージ「丘の上のエンジェル」は秀逸。知られざる、忘れられつつある横浜のもうひとつの戦後史を知るのにぜひ読みたい作品である。

カップスがらみで、60年代の横浜の無国籍都市としてのカッコよさを取り上げた文章を良く見かける。たしかにカップスのスリルは映画的なカッコよさがある。しかし、終戦後から、アメリカの実質的な植民地としての日本の防波堤として機能した港町の姿をきちんと語ったものは（少なくともカップス関連の文献としては）これだけである。英米の白人ブルースとも、大阪のブルースとも違うオリジナルなハマのブルースが誕生したドキュメントが、カップスとの関わりを交えながら語られている。

ゴールデン・カップスとの出会いを通じて見えてくる６０〜７０年代のＧＳに沸いていた横浜と、そこに集う人々の姿。そして作者はメンバーの一人であるエディ藩との交流から、横浜という街が負った悲しい歴史を知る事になる・・・。
ＧＳ好きの人よりは横浜という街に興味や思い入れのある人にお勧めです。
