この時期、自分の会社が壊滅状態に陥り東京で対処に苦労したことを思い出す。しかし、神戸で直接被害にあった人たちの静かな怒り・思いの深さは窺い知れない。神戸に長く住み、愛する著者が震災をうけて毎日新聞と決めていたテーマを変更して、1年間「阪神淡路大震災で何があったのか、なかったのか」をシリーズとして追求した力作。

関西と東京の物理的な距離以上に遠い精神的距離、「今までなかったこと」に対処できない国・地方自治体、過去にこだわり新しいことへ取り組めない権威主義の学会、学者。
震災後しばらくは各種の予算措置がなされたが、はたしてその成果と国民の安全や生活の回復に何をするのか明確な方針は？

まだこの著書で書かれた課題が解決の方向にあるようには思えないし、小松さんも最後に、少し落ち着いて体力の回復後、続編を書きたいということもいわれているが、今後を生きていく若い人たちへ引き継いでいかなければならない重いテーマだと思う。

この本知らなかった。出版が1996年６月で熊本に引っ越した直後だったからだろう。知っていれば絶対に買っていた。若かりし頃に『果てしなき流れの果てに』『復活の日』『見知らぬ明日』などを夢中で読んで以来、彼の著作は基本的にすべて読んでいたからだ。

読み始めてすぐになつかしい気持ちになった。地震の描写が『復活の日』や『日本沈没』を思い起こさせたからだ。本書がフィクションじみているのでは決してない。むしろ、彼の書いた大災害小説の描写が極めてリアリティーを持っていたのだ。

地元住民もまとめては知らない震災ドキュメントが、整理された形でしかも、勢いのある文章で綴られていて、読み出すと止まらない。極めて良質な震災の記録である。1995年４月１日から一年間毎日新聞の連載をまとめたもので、全体を一気に書いたものではないのに、単なるエピソードの集積ではなく体系的に感じるのは、著者が個々のエピソードを書く時にも揺るぎない視点を持っているからだろう。

かの大震災のドキュメントとしてこれほど優れたものはない。インターネットで公開するなり、なんとか広く読み続けられないものかと思う。
