　宮部先生のファンなのですが、本作は失敗作だと思います。

　新聞の細切れ連載でテンションが掴みにくかったのかな、と思うのですが、一連のシーンの流れの中で、起伏のつけ方がちゃんとしてません。一瞬盛り上がった感じになって、さあ、とノっていきたいところですぐに戻っちゃったり、かと思えば全然キてないところで作中だけ盛り上がっていたり、似たような説明や描写を何度も繰り返したり、この雰囲気の場面でそんな描写するなよみたいな描写が入ってきたり、全体的に、読んでいてチグハグに感じました。
　ストーリーの根っこも定まってないように感じました。作者がどんなところを狙ったのかがわかりません。陰惨で救いのない事件の周辺に焦点を当てたかったのか、"物語" というものの捉え方による面白さでいくのか、わくわくする冒険活劇で押していきたいのか。いろんなものを等分に詰め込もうとして、全部ぼやけてしまった感じがします。終盤の展開も唐突です。

　次回作に期待ということで★２です。

すべて読み終えてみると、厳しく評価した上巻の方が、
まだ面白かったかも。
”友里子の冒険”がメインになるあまり、
現実世界で兄が起こした殺傷事件がうやむやになり、
これでいいの？！と思ってしまいました。
最後の最後に関しては、
続編を匂わせているような気がするのですが、
わたしとしては、「英雄の書」はこれで終わらせてほしい。

宮部作品を長いこと読んでいますが、
ここまで疑問ばかりが残った作品もなかったかと。
あとがきの作者の思い入れとは反比例した感想です。

3.0 out of 5 stars 全体的に悪い印象はないのですが…, 2009/3/25
ここで出てくる冒険の結末としては、単なるファンタジーでなく、｢いじめ｣｢10代の犯罪｣という、現実問題も絡ませている小説と考えると、あのような結末で納得がいきますし、全体的に私は悪い印象は持っていません。
ただ上巻に比べ、やや評価を落としているのは、下巻に入り、「灰の男」(アッシュ)の領域(リージョン)に入り込んだあたりで、さまざまな事柄が入り組み過ぎて解釈に非常に手間取りページをめくる手が滞ってしまったことが挙げられます。
また、結末に向かうにあたり、｢先が気になってしょうがない｣というよりは、｢思わせぶりな言動で、結末を先延ばしにしている印象｣があったのも事実。

そして最後は確かに続編が出てきそうな終わり方であり、正直、アジュと再会してほしいと思うのもあるのですが、これで続編を書いてしまったら、この話は永遠に終わらないような気もしますので、ここで終わらせておいた方がいいのかもしれませんね。
