西部劇ファンなら、この小説の題名からおよその内容がお分かりだろう。ご推察のとうり、物語上でワイアット・アープとＯＫ牧場の決闘についての史実が詳細に語られており、作者の薀蓄が溢れ出ている。
当然、関連する多数の映画作品についても豊富な情報が紹介されており、西部劇映画ファンであれば、この作品を読んだあとでコレクションのビデオを見直すこと請け合いである。
けっして期待を裏切られない作品であり、ファンであれば是非一読することをお勧めする。

すでにハリウッドで西部劇らしい西部劇を作れる映画人はクリント・イーストウッド唯一人である、勤勉に映画製作を続けるクリントであるが残された時間内に西部劇を作るかどうかはきわめて微妙であろう、日本でかつての黄金時代のような時代劇を作れないのと同様である、昨年公開された「アラモ」はよくぞ作ってくれたと多くの西部劇ファンが感涙にむせんだに違いない、

本作は西部劇映画に関する「薀蓄小説」としては稀に見る水準を実現している、したがっていわゆる娯楽小説の面白さとは少々趣きが異なる、ある映画の一つのシーンに関する分析がえんえんと続いたりするので、読者を選んでしまうことも間違いない、

このまま英訳すれば日本以上にアメリカでロング・セラーになるだろうと思う、ただし西部劇映画について多少の予備知識がなければどこがどう面白いのかさっぱりわからん、という状態になりかねません、１９７０年代以降生まれの若い読者であれば、例えばレンタルが容易に可能な「ＯＫ牧場の決闘」、例えばＢＳでよく放送されるリチャード・ウィドマーク主演映画やジョン・フォード監督映画、などを見た上で西部劇が自身の嗜好とあうかどうか確認のうえだページを開いたほうがいいでしょう、

団塊の世代より以前の方々が西部劇に夢中になった様が逢坂し得意のテンポで伝わってきます。「牙をむく都市」でも映画通をしびれさせたことと思うが、さらにそれを上回る内容でしょう。一気に読破しました。
