デヴロー家では亡き伯爵の遺言書が公開されるところであった。
後継者である息子ジャックが家出したまま戻らないと判断した親戚たちは転がりくる遺産に期待していた。
しかし遠縁で養女のキャスは全く見向きもされず。
弁護士もそろい間もなく読み上げられると思った頃、突然一人の勇ましい男性が入ってきた。
その男性こそ亡き伯爵の放蕩息子ジャックであり、ついに後継者が現れたのである。
どよめく親戚達は抗議するも遺言書の通り全財産はジャックに渡り、そしてその条件を満たす為に3カ月以内に結婚をしなければならないという。
キャットの事は一切触れられていないので、ついに彼女は自分はどうなるのかジャックに直接聞いた。
初めて出会った小柄で痩せた魅力のない女性にジャックは、妻になるよう促した。
そして形ばかりの夫婦生活が始まる。

いわれのない罪から地獄のような生活を強いられたヒーロー。
そこから得た教訓がこのストーリーに生かされています。
何もしないで裕福な生活をしている親戚達を懲らしめたい一心でヒロインと結婚したヒーロー、でもヒロインの湧き出てくる魅力に見事にノックアウト、とても面白いです。
ヒロインは自分のことをさえない女性と思っているのですが、強烈な個性と優れたセンスが多くの男性を魅了します。
正直で生き生きとしたヒロインがとても可愛く、翻弄されるヒーローが楽しめます。
そして最後は過去のスキャンダルを全て封印しようと決意したヒーローの言葉がとても素敵でした。
