メディアで多く語られるも錯綜し正確でない情報があふれる中、もっともわかりやすく正確なパンデミックについてのいい一冊が出ました。地方の一記者の視点から調査されることがリアルで身近でわかりやすさの最重要ポイント。鳥から人への感染はあるのか？どこまで感染は広がるのか？ただの情報の羅列でなく、物語の中で自然に語られればすんなり理解できます。必読。

横浜市で鳥Flu発生、ヒト感染、その特ダネを描いた小説だから大変興味深いと思いきや、私の期待と違い時代背景は1985年秋、つまりキーワードは「鳥Fluはヒトに感染しない」が常識の時代の由。しかしそれだと書名・副題と整合性が取れない。著者の希望で新聞記者の仕事振りと特ダネを取る話の方に軸足が置かれる。そして肝心の鳥Fluや新型Fluの解説がとても甘い。あまりに基本的、或いは専門家からの単純受売りだ。多くの新型Flu解説書を読んでいる読者には、本書の内容には満足出来ないはずだ。横浜市瀬谷区内の矢口養鶏場で鶏の大量死と、経営者家族3人の変死で神奈川県警が動く。ここからが遅々として非常にもどかしい。本文は199ページの作品だが、イヴに横浜駅他各地でで高熱を発し倒れた人々が33名、この場面がやっとp.182だ。それまでは記者が県警幹部に夜回りや、特ダネを如何に取るかの話ばかりだ。不思議なのは、「後輩記者が感染した疑いありなのに、隔離せず一緒に特ダネを書く」とか、「他社の女性記者の感染入院を特ダネにする」だの、「担当医師は鳥Flu感染を知らない」とか、「医師は記事のお蔭でFluによる肺炎と断定した」と。これが1985年当時の常識だったのか。訳がわからず、馬鹿らしい。怒ると言うより思わず笑ってしまう。もっと凄いのは、患者入院の特ダネ後、1週間過ぎても神奈川県、横浜市は沈黙のまま。更にイヴの夜に33人発症の後、5日経過して横浜市では発症者が3万人を超え、致死率約2％、600人近い死者を出した。しかし記者会見は県庁や横浜市の幹部、県警捜査1課長他のみ。首相も担当大臣も他の都道府県知事も登場がない。神奈川県内だけで話が進む。ちょっとおかしくないか？やはり強毒性H5N1新型Fluの近未来小説が欲しい。1985年当時が舞台では・・。正直申し上げて本書よりは、大西正夫氏、皆川正夫氏、岡田晴恵氏、NHK最強ウイルスプロジェクト著の各書をお薦めする。
