「すべての美しき馬」のマッカーシーが、こんなクライムノベルを、しかも七十歳を越えて書くとは。
感情描写を完全に排して、魅力的な人物像を造り、そして「切る」。
アメリカという国のあり方に、深い懐疑と逃れられない「愛」を溢れさせた、アンチ純文学の傑作であり、アンチ・ミステリの傑作。
コーエン兄弟の映画化、日本公開が待たれる。

テキサスの国境地帯を舞台に血なまぐさい場面が連鎖反応的に展開される。一つの行動をきっかけに物語は動きだす。寓話・神話的な理不尽な運命が紡ぎだされる。追う者がいて追われる者がいて巻き込まれる者もいれば弾き出されてしまった本来の語り部もいる。

状況説明や心理描写が徹底的に刈り込まれた乾いた文体が全てを制圧します。会話はあっても会話ではないのです。会話は何も導きだしはしないから。音楽も聞こえないし銃声すら聞こえないでしょう。表面的な悲哀や刹那の恐怖は無意味だから。ひたすら語りと対峙しなければならないのです。その緊張感の中でどんな寓話が見えてくるのでしょうか。残虐シーンの連続にもかかわらず冒頭から一貫する静謐さの先に見つけるのはただのコインだけなのでしょうか。表か裏かの。
追う者（運命）は言います、

「共通の行き先を持つものには共通の道がある。それは容易に見つかるとは限らない。だがちゃんとあるんだ。」

いったい何の話をしてるんだ？と思った人はすでに『血と暴力の国』に入ってます。ただそこは追う者の言葉とは裏腹に因果を超えた諸事象が語りでえぐられ無秩序が曝けだされた蓋然性の世界です。ですから読後に残るのは不穏と戸惑いと鳥肌かもしれません。DEAL or NO DEAL?と攻められてるようです。

本書は、08年のアカデミー賞４部門を獲得した映画「ＮＯ　ＣＯＵＮＴＯＲＹ」の原作だが、レビュアーは、映画を見てどうしてもラストが腑に落ちなかったので、やはり原点に当たるべしと思って読んだ。
やはり映画では難しかったが（英語なので余計かもしれないが）、本書はそれなりに理会できた。
簡単に言えば、人は自分の運命を選ぶことはできない、したがって、変えることもできない。だからといって、いい加減に生きるのではなく、キチンと摂理をもって生きろ、いわんや殺し屋をや、といったところか。
これを踏まえると、さすがコーエン兄弟の映画である。賞を与えたアメリカの映画芸術科学アカデミーも立派だ。
