この作家のものを読むのは初めて。
映画になった話題の本ということで、期待して読みましたが、
どうにもこうにも、私の人間としての器が小さすぎるのかと落ち込みそうになりました。
男はかくも自分に調子のよい話を夢見るものなか。
余命半年と分かったとき、誠実でありたいと思った結果が、
結婚が決まったときに、一方的に連絡を断ち切った女性と会って許しを請うことや、
堕胎を迫って去っていった女性と再会すること。
元気に動けるうちに、愛人には病状を打ち明け逢瀬を繰り返し、旅行を楽しみ、
動けなくなってから妻に看病をしてもらう男。
ホスピスに愛人を呼び、妻と対面させて、もうすぐ死ぬ自分の気持ちを分かってくれという男。
息子に愛人を頼むと言う父親。
自分が死んだ後、愛人を支えてくれる人間が息子でも良いなどと本気で願う男。
夫の死後、息子がその愛人と深く関わることなど、妻の気持ちを考えたら、
頼める事など出来るのだろうか。
あまりに妻という人物が感情のない人間のように描かれていて、
人が良すぎることに感心してしまった。
その妻を、愛人には「そういう女なんだ」という男。
あまりに都合がよすぎて、泣けるどころか、笑えました。
仕事人間で、家庭を顧みず、愛人を作り、好き勝手をやってきて、余命半年と宣告されたとき、
世界中でいちばん愛していると言っている妻との時間を大切に紡ごうとしなかった男の
どこに誠実さを見つければ良いのだろう。

主人公は、肺ガンで余命６カ月を宣告された48歳の男である。
ステージ４で助かる見込みもないと知って、彼は延命治療を一切拒否する。
そして、これまで心にひっかかっていた様々な人と会って、
自分がもう長くないと告げる……。
初恋の人、昔付き合っていた女性、喧嘩別れした親友……
いわば自分捜しの旅に出るわけだが、
たしかに目の前に「自分はもうすぐ死ぬ」と言う人間が現れたら
誰だって同情的になったり感傷的になったりするとはいうものの、
あまりに主人公にとって都合の良すぎる予定調和――という感は否めない。

このあたりが、秋元康が「小説家」ではなく、「構成作家」ということなのだと思う。
ストーリーをつむぐのではなく、
いろいろな感動シーン、「こう展開すれば受け手はほろりと来るだろう」というデータ、
それらをパッチワークのようにつなぎ合わせたファンタジーだと言っていい。

予定調和とわかっていてもそれなりにほろりと来るのはさすがだが、
ちょっと★５つまでは無理だと思う。
だって、登場する女性のほとんどが、主人公に対して涙を流したり……
男の願望としてわからないでもないが、
読者をうならせる物語ではないと思う。

余命半年を宣告された中年男が、生きている間に会いたい人にあって、思いを伝えるという内容。自分が生きた証を必死に探し、確認し、満足して死ぬ。主人公に傷つけられた人も、それを許して、男は満足して死んでいく。いい死に方だよね。でも、感情移入できないなあ。男の身勝手が鼻につく場面が多い。よくもまあ、主人公にとって都合のいい女性が次から次へと登場してくるなあと思った。
