木曜深夜にフジテレビで放送中の情報番組「ニューデザインパラダイス」で紹介されたプロダクトをまとめた書籍。

同番組は、既存のプロダクトのデザイン再生をクリエーターに依頼してその成果を紹介している。本書ではそのうち、横断歩道、紙コップ、電話ボックスなど22点を収録した。同時にそれらを手がけた22人のクリエーターのインタビューも収録している。

クリエーターはデザイナーを中心に、建築家、コピーライター、パティシエ、音楽家などバラエティーに富む。

スケッチやラフモデルなども掲載されており、番組を見たことがない人でも十分に楽しめる。

概要
モノのデザインにはそれなりの意味があり、進化の理由がある。しかし日常生活に埋もれ、人々はカタチに新鮮味を感じなくなってしまった。そこで、さらなる可能性を見出すべく、デザインラボラトリーの主宰・谷原章介は、人類が作り上げた物のデザインの歴史を分析し、リセットして再生する。そして、さらなる可能性を見出すべく新しいデザインを作り上げる。その新しいデザインを生み出すという重要な任務に挑むのは、現在活躍中のクリエーター陣。毎回多彩な強力なクリエーターを招き、奇想天外な発想でデザインを追及する。モノの「デザイン」をテーマに、人類の様々な文化を読み解いていく、新しいスタイルの知的情報番組である

~　フジテレビ系のソフィスティケートされたデザイン番組『ニュー・デザイン・パラダイス』の成果物である。
　21作品が，作者のコメントやインタビューとともに収録されている。書籍化されたことにより，画面では読みとりにくかった部分が解って興味深い。
　そのなかで，須賀洋介の「マヨネーズの穴」，真島理一郎の「ボーリングのピン」，ナガオカケンメイ~~の「学校の机」が面白い。「マヨネーズの穴」は“料理はデザインであること”をあらためて思わせてくれるし，「ボーリングのピン」はデザインとしてでなくアートとしてみると刺激的な作品だ。「学校の机」は“デザインしないデザイン”として（でも明らかにデザインされている）極めて優れている。放送中に思わず胸が熱くなった作品。
　収録作品は，“所謂~~グッドデザイン”として見れば必ずしも優れたものばかりとはいえないかもしれない。実用性を考えたようにみえるものの，形が美しいだけで機能的な配慮が欠けているものもあるからだ。だが，それぞれに知的な刺激を与えてくれた。~

デザイン本は数多くあるけれど、身近なものをデザインしなおすというコンセプトの本は面白いし、そのなかでもこの本で取り上げているものはひねりが効いている。

「マヨネーズの穴」とか「タクシーの行灯」なんて気になってしょうがないでしょう？そのデザインの可否はともかく。

この本の素晴らしいところは、最初は「スゲェなぁ」と眺め、「これはこういうのもアリなのか？」と考えるところにある。そのデザインが好きか嫌いか、って考えて読むのもいい。でも本当にすごいのは、みんなが身近なところに転がっているデザインの種に気づいたり、ひいては色々な可能性を発見したりするためのキッカケになるところだ。

デザインにはまだまだ可能性があることに、そしてもしかしたら、自分の可能性にも、気づかせてくれる素敵な本。

~この本やばいよねー。ほんまに。これはおもろい。おもろい。いうても、いろんな活躍してる人が集まって、今あるのもを新しく作り替えて行くっていうわけやから。それで、その根本にある考え方は再デザインいうらしいんや。こればっかりは驚きやで。何がどうなってるかって言ったら、日常でよく見かけるアイテム、それって海外でみたら違ってて新鮮やったとか~~、それが旅のだいご味やったりするわけやん。でもその違いを、デザイン的に日常でやってしまおうというわけや。今の日本人って麻痺してるやろ。感覚麻痺。もう慣れきって、当たり前やと思うとるもんが多すぎる。日常に新鮮がないわな。それだけやなくて、時代にも合うとんねん。成熟した時代の次のステップっていうんかな。この考え方が。あらたに捉え直して~~、構築し直すいうわけや。参ったなーすごすぎる。なんと知的TV番組で、フジテレビの深夜にやってるようやで。東京で。東京は進んどるのお。~
