サマーワでの自衛隊の活動の様々な側面を紹介しています。

自衛隊がイラク人に極めて好意的に受け入れられた背景として、番匠一佐の「義理・人情・浪花節」（ＧＮＮ）という理念がありました。
たとえば、雇用した現地人に対してあたかも監視役のようにふるまう他の軍隊と異なり、ともに汗を流し同じ労働をしたり、音楽隊を組織して小学校を回ったり、こいのぼりをユーフラテス川に掲げたり、と、自衛隊が種々の制約の中、でき得る最大限のことをしました。それが、「日本の宿営地をテロから守ろう」というイラク人のデモ行進が行なわれるような、自衛隊に対する好感をもたらしました。
イラクでは長期にわたる独裁政治のために、自発的にどうしていくかを決めるとか創り出すとかいうことが行なわれておらず、自助という姿勢がまだ育っていません。そのために、「自衛隊の活動は自分たちのニーズにあっていない」という気持ちを持つ人々もいるわけで、それだけを取り上げて、「自衛隊の活動は全然役に立っておらず、反感を招いている」というような報道がなされることがありますが、そういうものがいかに一面的で偏向しているかが、この本によってわかります。

~昨今の自衛隊派遣に対する各新聞報道を鵜呑みにしている人たちに捧げる、現地・本人・長期取材の集大成。
違憲の軍隊として常に槍玉に上げられ、後ろ指を指され続けている自衛隊。しかし隊員達は本来非難される謂れは無いはず。~~
また、実社会において各種自然災害時に恩恵を受けた邦人も多いはず。声の大きい、影響力を持っている一部の報道関連に騙される事なく、愛すべき国の御盾である自衛隊の真実を知って欲しい。そしてなぜイラクへ行かねばならなかったのかを理解して欲しい。~

タイトルがちょっと独特？ですが、写真も多くて読みやすい一冊です。
各分野の自衛隊員へのインタビューが中心となっており、自衛隊員の皆様の苦労、喜び、そして正確でないマスコミや偏見を持った人たちに対する悲しみ…それらが少しずつ読み取れるような気がしました。

自衛隊の派遣に反対する団体が、自衛隊の駐屯地などでデモ活動をしたと聞きました。しかし、自衛隊はシビリアンコントロールの部隊です。勝手に自衛隊が行動することはなく、自衛隊員を派遣させたのは「市民」の代表である「政治家」です。自衛隊に矛先を向ける前に、もう一度考えていただきたい。また、そのためにも本書のような書籍で「人としての自衛隊員」を少しでも知っていただきたい、そんな気分になりました。
