私たち日本人の常識からは想像しがたいが、国際関係というものは、驚くほど単純な脅しの力学の上に成り立っている。東アジアもまた冷戦の遺物のような国家間の軋轢を残したままだ。戦後日本は平和主義を徹底しつつ経済発展を遂げてきた。しかし日本のおかれた立場が、必ずしも日本自身が望むような信頼関係の上に保障されているわけではない。そうである以上、抑止力としての自衛隊の存在を消し去ることなどできない。
本邦自衛隊は旧日本軍の伝統を受け継ぎながらも、創設以来ただの一度も内戦や国家間戦争に加担したことはない。そればかりか、類稀な強力なcivilian control下にあり、創設以来3万件以上に及ぶ救助活動に参加してきたという歴史を持つことを、本書は教えてくれる。平和主義国日本独自の｢軍｣のあり方として、私たちも誇るべきことではないだろうか。

｢武力｣といえば条件反射的に｢悪｣を連想する昨今の私たちだが、安穏とした私たちの日常が、非難にさらされながらも、黙って国防の労を惜しまない自衛隊員によって保障されてきたことは、気付くべきだと思う。武力保持をちょっとでも肯定すれば、今日の日本では右翼呼ばわりされて言論封殺の憂き目に遭いかねない。そうした風潮が、ごく平均的な国際感覚からすれば、いかに偏向したものであるかについて、気付かなければいけない。

一国平和主義の幻想から目覚め、安全保障、自衛隊のことを今こそ真剣に考えようという日本人はぜひこの本をお読みください。余談ですが、数年以内に憲法９条改正の為の国民投票が行われるのは間違いありません。この本を読めば投票日の朝、貴方が賛否どちらに○をするか、はっきりするはずです。

自衛隊は何かとマスコミに叩かれる事が多いですが、報道されている姿と実際の姿は正反対であることを教えてくれる本です。事実私も大東亜戦争については日本が完全に悪であったと思い込んでおり、本書を読んで今までの認識がいかに事実と相反していたかを思い知らされました。今まで軍事関係の本と思い、手にとってみなかった方も是非読んでみて欲しいです。自衛隊の本とゆうより、今までの日本、そしてこれからの日本について考えさせられます。
