一作目のOne for the Moneyが楽しかったので読みました。スッテンテンになって仕方なくはじめた賞金稼ぎですが、今日も唐辛子スプレーとスタンガンを武器にサクサク頑張る我らがステファニー・プラムなのです（今回遂にスタンガン使用シーンあり。爆笑）。当初は簡単に見えた初犯の青年の連行が奇妙にこじれて不穏な様相を呈する中、葬儀屋の二代目からは盗まれた棺桶2ダースを見つけてくれという依頼。

今回はお葬式がサブテーマです。葬儀といえば捨ててはおけないステファニーのおばあちゃんも要所要所に出没して（棺桶の蓋を無理やり開けたり死体の指をもぎ取ったり）、結局事件のケリだっておばあちゃんがつけたようなもの……なんでしょうか。

一作目もそうでしたが、いつもは眉間に皺を寄せて読むはずの英語でこんなに笑ってしまうとは、と我ながら驚きます。わずらわしい感情の解説もなく、出来事だけをさらさらと述べながら作者の意図するところと読み手の受け止め方が決してズレないところも爽快。話の面白さからするのに、中学校の副読本などにもいいのではないでしょうか。

This is the second Stephanie story and it does not betray expectations of the readers of previous volume. This time, the target of the novice bounty hunter is missing caskets! Isn't it intriguing? And to this extraordinary offense, the author provides an undercover scheme behind it.
Stephanie's attractiveness lies in her very human acts which sometimes endanger her life; she is not free from mistakes and she eats a lot of junk foods. However attractive the heroine is, a monotonous repetition of investigation would be boring. But in her second adventure Stephanie shows her development as a bounty hunter, to some extent.
In addition to that, we can see the relationship between Morelli and Stephanie go into more advanced, but more complicated phase, and Grandma Mazur is energetic as ever and keen on funerals, and in some sense, helped Stephanie solve the mystery. And we witness a debut of a very powerful character, an old Buick, which dominates the streets in Trenton with its stubborn existence in spite of embarrassment of the owner.

3.0 out of 5 stars 好き嫌いのはっきり分かれるシリーズ。数えて２作目, 2001/4/17
　ずっこけバウンティ・ハンター、ステファニー・プラム＝シリーズの第二弾である。結論から言うと、第一作『私が愛したリボルバー』よりも数段おもしろい。これぞキャラクター作家ですね。前作で大化けを予想させたメイザおばあちゃんが、ダーティ・ハリーまがいの名セリフつきの大活躍。他にも名キャラが気持ち良くさせてくれる。ステファニーとジョー・モレリのくっつきそうでくっつかない関係もそそられるし。まあ、このふたりはくっつかないんでしょうね。今回はギリギリまでいったからよもやと思ったが、毎回こんな感じでいくのでしょうね。違う？　いろいろ聞くほど抱腹絶倒ではないが、それなりに楽しめる作品ではある。

　ただし、好みが分かれる作家ですね。分岐点は、たぶん、ステファニーやメイザおばあちゃんの活躍に、素直に乗っかれるかどうかでしょう。ぼくはちょっと眉唾なので、ミステリ的な部分以外がおもしろいのは認めるけど、物語全体としては最後まで乗り切れなかった。こうなると好みの問題でしょうか。いかにも作り物めいた印象が拭い去れないのだ。残念ながら、社会病質者というかサイコな雰囲気のケニーにも中途半端な感想しかないし。

　冒険小説を指して、谷底に転落しようが戦闘機に爆撃されようが、どんな危機的状況に陥ろうともスーパーマンのごとく主人公が絶対に死なないとか、事件に次ぐ事件にリアリティが無いとか、事件とその展開があまりに派手でこんなことがあるわけない荒唐無稽に過ぎる、などの批判をよく耳にする。もちろん、的外れな批判だと言うつもりはないが、ぼくはこのステファニー・シリーズみたいな物語の方により作為を感じてしまうのだ。リアリティではなく作為。あざとさ。厳冬のダムの放水管に流されて、びしょ濡れになって凍りついてもなお戦いつづけるダム作業員よりも、敵数十人を瞬く間に仕留めてしまう戦闘マシーンと化した伝説のスナイパーよりも、全身麻痺の科学捜査官よりも作り物めいた不自然さというか作為を感じてしまうのだ。

　それでも、とても評判のよろしいシリーズなので、たぶん、ぼくの好みでは無いのだと思うことで納得している。もうちょっとミステリ風味を強くして、陰影を濃くして、緩急をつけてくれれば好みなのですが。それではシリーズの良さが全部損なわれてしまうか……。
