ホラー作家ディーン・R・クーンツが好きだったので、手に取りました。
この本のコンセプトは、『異形コレクション・シリーズ』と同じように、
あるテーマを題材に、20人のホラー作家が書き下ろした短編のアンソロジーということで、
電車での移動中に読むのにもってこいということで、財布と相談せずに（値段を見ずに）
レジに持っていったのを覚えています。（ま、たかだか720円程度だったんですが）

テーマはスリラー小説の原点『追うもの、追われるもの』。
作品によって、『追うもの』が主人公だったり、『追われるもの』が主人公だったり、
『追うもの』が人外のものだったり、『追われるもの』がそうだったりと、
作風の違いもさることながら、着眼点の違いが明白に出ていて、比較することも楽しみとなりました。

こういった短編アンソロジーの面白さは、『短編』という長さを限られた中で、
いかに素早く読者を作品世界に取り込んで、共感を得、興味を削がないうちに結末まで引っ張り、
いかに結末で裏切る、もしくは納得させるかの妙にあると思います。

そういった面で、この本はかなり手練手管の優れた作家の競い合いが楽しめ、
面白い1冊だったと思います。
