海底火山の活動によりスペイン国土並みの棚氷が剥離し、世界が水没の危機に襲われるという着想は中々よい。
ただし危機をめぐっての米ソの政治的駆け引き、科学者、ジャーナリストの活躍、破滅へのカウントダウンといったそれぞれの展開がみな中途半端である。

バー＝ゾウハーのような謀略もなく、バグリイの描く自然の脅威にも及ばず、残念ながらすべての点で中庸といわざるを得ない。膨大な資料を駆使したというのはよくわかるが、そのゆえに単純な緊迫感に欠けているような気がする。
話題になったわりには案外な一作であった。
