数あるスティーブン・キングの作品の中で一番好きな作品です。４００ページ弱の中に短編が１０本あるので１つ１つがあっという間に読み終わります。どの作品も必ず最後に不快な気分にさせられるのにまた読み返したくなる、さすがＳ・キングです。他に『骸骨乗組員』、『神々のワード・プロセッサ』が同じシリーズでありますが、原作は『ミルクマン』を含めた３冊で１冊の短編集になってます。どれからでも読めますし、１冊読めば必ず他の２冊も読みたくなりますよ。Ｓ・キングの名前は知っているけど読んだことのない方にはこの辺から入るといいかも。ちなみにこの３冊の中で私の一番好きな作品は『ミルクマン』の中の『生きのびるやつ』です。ホントいやーな気分になりますよ。

短編もそれなりに良いのですが、やはり中編の「霧」が最高です。これ一作だけだったとしても十分満足できます。嵐の後に突然街を覆った深い霧。スーパーマーケットに閉じこめられた人々が経験する怪奇現象。未知の怪物。助かる道を求めておこるグループ間の対立。そして脱出した人々に待ち受ける運命は？　映像化の予定がないのが残念の一言です。

「ショーシャンク」、「グリーンマイル」と
原作に忠実に映画化し続けていたフランク・ダラボン。
今回はエンディングを大幅に変えることにより、
作品そのものの持つ性格をまるで変えてしまいました。

その評価は置いておいて、映画をご覧になられた方でも、
「霧」を含むこの短編集は十分に購入の価値があるかと思います。

「霧」は、物語の終え方により、
その深い魅力を獲得してると言えるかと思います。
（そのやり方には著者自身、本作品中でイイワケしちゃってますが）
読了後も、ずっと記憶に残るような作品で、
実際、映画化を十数年待ちわびてしまいました。
（映画を観終わった後は、先に原作を読んでいた幸福を感じてしまいましたが）

読み終えられた方にも、ちょっといいお話を。
どこで読んだか、作者の方も失念してしまいましたが、本作の素晴らしい評論を読んだことがあります。（絶版になっているような、キング評論の本でした）
その中で、本作のラスト、主人公が息子にささやいた言葉。
少し難解で、明言されない一文がありますが、
その「似通った２つの言葉」を、
"hope"と"home"と予想していました。

まさに、本作を貫くテーマです。傑作。
