猫と一緒に暮らしたことのある方なら、細密画家モーティマーの描く猫の感触、雰囲気がいかに生き生きしたものであるか納得されることでしょう。絵本ではクリスマスと猫という組み合わせは定番だといえますが、キリスト教にはむしろそぐわない、猫の異教的な存在感がよくあらわされていて、クリスマスの装飾の一部になることを静かに拒んでいるようです。日常と祝祭日のはざまにある静かなひとときが見事に映し出された素晴らしい絵本だと思います。

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne Mortimerの画集が欲しくなる, 2003/3/4
ただ可愛いだけではない。アン・モーティマーの描く猫は生きている。何かを見て、考えて、触って、そして寝ている。その寝顔は幸せそのもの。マーガレット・Ｗ・ブラウンの書くクリスマス・イヴを、モーティマーは猫になって想像して、この絵を描いたのだろう。

「王立細密画家協会会員、野生の生物や花の絵が専門で、猫を描く現代の画家たちの中でももっとも優れているうちの一人」と紹介されているとおり、その繊細さは筆舌に尽くし難いほど。モーティマーばかりを誉めてはと思うが、この一冊を手にして、輸入版を買いまくり、後は画集が出ないものかと思っている。

とにかく絵が美しい！緻密なタッチで、ネコの愛らしさやクリスマスの楽しさが表現されていて、クリスマスでなくてもワクワクします。こねことともに、うっとりするようなクリスマスを過ごしたい・・・。文章があるところにも、しおりのような細い枠に絵が描かれていて、いつまでも見つめていたい絵本です。

とにかく緻密で美しい絵にカンゲキ！クリスマスの繊細な美しさ・静かな楽しさがネコの目を通して伝わってきます。クリスマスでなくても毎日眺めていたい本ですよ。
