once upon a time…アルプスの谷間の村に、とても貧乏な靴屋さんが住んでいました。
さあさ、きょうのごちそうは…シュニッツル、シュノッツル、シュヌーツル！
いつも貧しい暮らしでしたが、3人の子どもたちは、お父さんのおまじないの言葉で幸せでした。でも、戦争がはじまり、クリスマスの準備さえできなくなりました。そこに現れたのはゴブリン。さあ、どうなるんでしょう？このお話し、あちこちに楽しい言葉遊びがあって、子どもたちがその箇所にくると一緒に「シュヌッツ、シュノッツ、シュヌーツル！」と声に出してくれそうです。大人も楽しめますよ。

ニューベリー賞受賞のルースソーヤーがチロルのゴブリン民話を再話したお話です。貧乏な靴屋さん一家に訪れたクリスマスの奇跡。クリスマスって、こういうことが本当に起きそうです。バーバラクーニーの淡いタッチの挿絵の、心をほっこりあたためてくれます。チロルの山々や、妖精の愛くるしい仕草が清々しい彩りで描かれていて、ずっと大切に持っていたい本です。掛川恭子さんの翻訳もGood！
