ニューヨーク、産卵のため月から帰ってきた三つ子の人魚ベンジャミン、ティルト、セツ。しかし女性として子ども（卵）を産めるのはベンジャミンだけ。彼（彼女：普段は小さな男の子だが、好きな人の前だと絶世の美女になる、性が変わる）が恋したのは、おちぶれたダンサーのアート。しかしベンジャミン＝人魚が、アート＝人間の男性に恋をすれば、大きな災いが起こるという。物語は様々な人々の思惑、感情を孕んで、やがてその大惨事と運命の愛の結末へと向かっていく。

初めて読んだ清水玲子さんの作品です。なんで人魚の恋愛話がチェルノブイリ、果ては地球の未来の話につながっていくんだ、すごい！と、衝撃を受けました。その中でも、誰が卵を産むのか―ベンジャミンを守るため報われない愛に苦しむセツ、災いを引き起こすべく宿命を背負うティルト、性格も考え方もまるで異なる三つ子の愛憎劇が哀しいです。

余談ですが、これに出てくるホリー（アートの元恋人、売れっ子のダンサー）という女性に憧れます。好きな人にまでいじわるをする大人の余裕ぷり。プライド高くて気も強いんだけど、それに見合うだけの努力をちゃんとしてるという女性。
