描く作品すべてが傑作になってしまう作者ですが、
その中でも静かな珠玉の傑作です。

恋のような恋ではない、すぐに過ぎ去ってしまうひとときを、
ていねいに静かに描いてます。
アクションを女性ながらハードに描かれる方が、
まったく違う視点からこんなにきれいな作品を作られることが
もう奇跡のようです。

女性なら一度は感じる一瞬の気持ちが、これを読むとリピートされます。

丘の上に建つ数百本の桜に囲まれた女子高を舞台に、演劇部所属の4人の女の子の思春期の心情を描いた物語。

中学、高校生の頃って明るく輝くような楽しさと独特な悶々とした暗さ・気だるさが混在するとても独特な時期だ。この時期の悩みってやっぱり異性との関係のものが大きいでしょう、キスやセックスの初体験、そこまで直接的じゃなくても気になる異性に自分がどう思われているのかはかなり気になる重要な問題だ。彼女たちはそれぞれに悩むけど、友達や彼氏や姉などとの関わり合いの中でそれぞれに自分自身で答えを見つけ大人になっていく。その微妙な彼女たちの心の揺れが繊細に描かれた良い作品だなと思う。私はいつもこれを読むと中学時代を思い出す。普通の共学だったのだけど、何でかな？この話の中で女の子が女の子を好きになるという設定があるけれど、別にレズとかじゃなくて、友達とも違う｢好き」の感情。これって女の子独特のものじゃないかな？特に10代の女の子。なんかそういう感情って男にはあんまりない気がする。
だいぶ古い作品だし、今読んでみるとちょっと時代が合わないところもあるけれど（キス＝公園とか）今でも十分通じる作品でしょう。吉田秋生さんの作品の中でなら「ラヴァーズ・キス」に雰囲気が近いですね。

手持ちは文庫化される以前のものであるが、読み返しては手放せず、今に至る。１０代が遠くなっても、胸に深く響く傑作。
好きで好きでたまらなくて、ままならなくて、切なくて。満開の桜を冠にいただく、夫を持たない王女たちの国。
我が身が女であることを思い知らされる頃。恋が思うだけのものから、生身に切迫するようになる頃。
私に触れずに過ぎた男たちが優しかったと思いを馳せるなど、ものの見方に随分と驚かされた。
時世の違いができてしまったが、世俗から切り離されたかのような女子校の、どこか浮世離れしたことを許される空気を味わうと、作品の古びることない魅力を感じる。
