農業とか牧畜とか、森とかをテーマにした短編作品がセレクトされている文庫版コミックです。川原氏の作品は全体にゆったりとした時間が流れているように思いますが、テーマのせいか、本作品集にはそのゆったり感が濃いようです。ほのぼのとしたトーン、ギャグも爆笑ではなく含み笑いを誘う控えめなものです。川原氏の特徴である妙な薀蓄（ワインの製造法とかトロピカルフルーツの学術的紹介だとか）も満載です。
いつも感じるのですが、川原氏の漫画は読後感がよいと思います。たとえ、ハッピーエンドでなくても、何か心の中に温かく残るものがあるからです。

この作品集の中では表題作「美貌の果実」を読んで不覚にも泣いてしまいました。男手を事故でなくした葡萄園に葡萄の精が手伝いに訪れるファンタジーに川原氏のよく描く年の差カップルの話がからむのですが、ラストのエピソードにほろりとしてしまいました。「架空の森」「森には真理が落ちている」も切なくて（でも、笑える）、優しい気持ちになれます。

心がささくれ立ってるなと思った時に読んでみて下さい。

　少女漫画に偏見を抱いていた学生時代。その頃、付き合っていた女性に本書「美貌の果実」を勧められて、読み始めたのですが、

”お、おもしろすぎる・・・”

翌日、彼女へ一言。「川原泉の漫画って他に無いの？」

　あの出会いから約20年近くたっていますが、寺田寅彦の「柿の種」（こちらも心落ち着貸せてくれます）同様、何か不安感を感じる夜や寝付けない夜に読む習慣が続いています。
　川原泉の魅力は、登場人物の哲学的に感じるせりふや、短編でさえ十分すぎるほどの知識等あげられやすいですが、私にとって、登場人物たちの律儀な思いやりや、けなげさが心にしみてくるのです。

　「愚者の楽園」、「大地の貴族」、「美貌の果実」の三本立てで送る、川原教授の農業讃歌物語。
　いつものごとくうんちくが乱れ飛ぶなか、人と人とがつながり合い助け合う様がさらりと描かれていて、かえって胸にじんわり残るものがある。どこか切なさを含むそんな日常こそ、私には楽園に見える。
　読み終えると森に降りしきる白い花が残像を描く、喪失と獲得の物語、「架空の森」も傑作。
