このシリーズはどれをとっても面白い。

根がお節介な(?)バジル氏が今日もいろいろなことに巻き込まれ...登場人物の描写も素晴らしい。英国人の理想、高等遊民を地で行っている感じのバジル氏、いいコンビのフランス人召使少年ルイ、いかにもな感じの執事やバカ正直・クソ真面目が逆に可笑しいウォールワース、絵を描くことで頭がいっぱいの画家のハリー、詐欺師で絵モデルのアーサー,etc.

英文学者の人がBBCでドラマ化して欲しいと言っていたのに納得。さらっと描いた感じの筆運びだが、嫌味なく当時についての豊富な知識も凝縮されている。

坂田靖子の作品は上質の短編小説を読んだ時のような余韻を残すものが多い。中でもこの『バジル氏の優雅な生活』のシリーズは、どれもこれもが完璧の趣。仮に一生読み続けられる程の量があれば、一生読み続けていたいと思わせる。
残念ながら、シリーズが休止して久しい。　･･･　願うのは、シリーズ復活のことばかり･･･

坂田先生の描く悪党は魅力的だ。『時計じかけのオレンジ』の主役・アレックスのごとく、偽善心なく、邪悪で、性的魅力たっぷりで、なにより知性に溢れている。「バジル氏」も例外ではない。詐欺師アーサー、女たらし（でもヒロイック）なバジル・ウォーレン卿、（文庫５巻で登場する）貴族の実の兄貴、コックニーのワル女…みんな大好きだ。個人的に一番好きなのがアーサー。
ではこのお話ですが、単純な勧善懲悪話じゃない。時代ものにありがちな桃太郎伝説（？）など期待してはいけません。近代イングランドを下層、富裕層分け隔てなく描いている。
まずこの文庫ではフランス人のルイくん（あ…ひょっとしたら、佐々木倫子『忘却シリーズ』の勝久くんの飼い犬の名前の由来かも）が生来の語学天才ぶりを生かしウォーレン卿と親しくなるお話から始まります。そしていきなり不倫沙汰…いやあ、さすが坂田先生。漫画の常識という常識を完全無視していらっしゃる。素晴らしい（皮肉お世辞抜きで）。
バジル・ウォーレンはとても女性が好きだが、同時に正義感にも燃えている。どんな悪漢にもタメで張り合い持ち前の知性（と性欲？）で必ずぶちのめす。そこを、「勧善懲悪」ととらえないでいただきたい。あくまで坂田先生は「誠意」のあるキャラクターをかっこよく描きたいのである。
この巻が気に入ったら次へどうぞ。なお、第５巻の終わりの「百の器」は文庫書き下ろしだそうです。
