終わり方には救いようのない孤独感が溢れています。
厩戸王子（聖徳太子）は冷血な人間で、かつ同性愛者として描かれています。
もしもこの物語でなくパっといきなり見せられたとしたら、ただ悪趣味で気味の悪い主人公には違いありません。
ただストーリーを追うごとに厩戸皇子を愛さずにはいられなくなるのです。
私は一時期この作品に支えられていたことがありました。眠る前に毎日といっていいほど読みました。そして「ああ、ここに来れば彼が必ずいるなぁ。」と思い、それは親しい身内か恋人か、もしくは弱い自分自身に会うような安堵感でした。仲間と言いかえても良いかも知れません。結果として救いようのない話だったのにもかかわらず、なんでこの作品にこんなにも癒されたのだろう？と考えると、結局、それは厩戸皇子が孤独なままだったという事が大きいと思います。「私はそうじゃない！」と思ってはいても、また今現在そうではなくても、そうなる可能性は常にあり、その恐怖心は少しでも何かが崩れればいつでも蘇ってきます。
私はこの作品で自分が一番恐れていたことを知りました。そして、だからこそ、その現実を最後に享受した厩戸皇子に愛情と親近感を感じずにはいられませんでした。

　とにかく厩戸王子の存在感が圧倒的です。強烈な美貌、ぞっとするほどの冷酷さ、恐ろしいまでに切れる頭脳、それでいてどこか寂しげな面影と時折見せる子どものような無邪気さ。全７巻を一気に読み終わり、走馬灯のように脳裏に思い浮かぶのは厩戸王子の姿ばかりです。冷たく恐ろしい人であるにもかかわらず、どうしようもなく魅せられてしまうのです。愛されていないと知りつつも、彼を思い切ることができない彼の妃たちの気持ちも、痛ましいまでにわかります。
　大王の御子という高貴な血と美貌を誇り、幼少の頃より神童と名高い厩戸王子。一見、何もかもに恵まれているような彼が、なぜ道ならぬ恋にあれほど苦しまなければならなかったのか。あの気位の高い王子をこんなにズタズタに引き裂くなんて！と読みながら毛人（えみし）に殺意を抱いたのは私だけではないはず。「わからぬのか…」。あんな哀しい涙を見たくはなかったです。
　「じぶんでじぶんを救うことができないものの所に現れる。それが仏」。神は祟る、仏は救う。弱冠20才そこそこの若さで大王の摂政として政治の実権を握った厩戸王子。物語はここで終わる。これから先、彼はどのように生きていくのだろうか。言い知れぬ孤独を抱え、たった一人で…

厩戸王子が天才で超能力者でアダルトチルドレンでゲイ、で蘇我毛人に惚れている。
そんな大胆なストーリーですが、政治的な骨子がしっかりしており（ほぼ史実どおり）
歴史好きにもとっても楽しめる作品です。
仏教が政略的に利用されていく過程や、豪族同士の覇権争いなど、
リアリティがあり人間くさく、遠い昔のことなのに身近に感じられます。
ところで毛人が愛する女性、布都姫がつまんない女で、
「何であんな女がいいのよっ」て厩戸や刀自古ちゃんが逆上する気持ち、わかるなあ。
