演劇の世界で生きる少女マヤを主人公にしたストーリー。演劇界幻の名作とされる紅天女を軸に、足長おじさん的存在の速水真澄との恋愛や、マヤとは対照的な少女でありライバルでもある亜弓との競争が、螺旋のようにからみながらこの物語のクライマックスである紅天女の上演に向けて一気に登りつめていく。一度読み始めると止まらない面白さ。眠れません。

　超ロングランとなったガラスの仮面の第１作。作者の美内すずえさんも当時２５歳の若さでとても初々しい画風が印象的です。平凡でどこといって取り柄のない少女の演劇にかける情熱を描いたこの作品ですが、多くの人が持っている変身願望を演劇を通して実現するﾆいうあり方が共感を呼び長い間支持されてきたのではないでしょうか。
　第１巻では母親との葛藤、月影、姫川親子、桜小路、速水、小野寺などの主要登場人物との出会いが描かれ、小気味よいスピーディな物語の展開となっています。紅天女の後継者を探していた月影千草に北島マヤが目にとまり、劇団月影に引き取るまでというのが主なストーリーです。実の母親からの熱湯によるせっかんからマヤを守った千草ですが、このことにより親子は演劇修行の障害であるとのことから引き離されてしまいます。今後の厳しい道のりを示唆する巻としてできばえは秀逸です。

今でも重版が当たり前のように繰り返されてて、全国どころか世界中に老若男女のファンがいて。
『恐ろしい作品!』

そうして著者の生活が成り立っているから続きは出るとしても5年後くらいかもしれない。それさえも希望的観測ですがね。
中毒性のある、麻薬のような作品です。内容なんて知っているのに、それでも読み始めると42巻までとまりません。明日デートでも、仕事でも、も〜とまらないんです。
知らないほうが幸せなこともある…と、未読の方々にご忠告申し上げます…。
