1894年生まれ。本名は平井太郎。1923年『二銭銅貨』でデビュー。探偵小説の第一人者として『屋根裏の散歩者』『陰獣』『蜘蛛男』などの代表作を次々と発表。1936年、初の少年向け読み物『怪人二十面相』が評判を呼び、明智小五郎と少年探偵団が活躍する「少年探偵」シリーズとして現在も読み継がれている。1965年没(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　もう少し上の世代に人には、光文社の少年探偵団シリーズが懐かしいと感じるのでしょうが、私にとっての少年探偵団は、このポプラ社のものです。当時の表紙・挿絵がそのままに文庫化されました。大好きだった柳瀬茂さんの挿絵も目次の上のカットも当時のままだと思われます。確か、裏表紙にあったトランシーバーを使う小林少年のカットが表紙の折り返しの所に来ていることぐらいが違いかも。しかし、これを今の子が見たらでっかい携帯電話だと思うでしょうね。それにしても、乙一さんの解説（というか感想文？）、なんとかならないかなぁ。なにがいいたいのやら……。ちょいと世代が遅すぎたのではないでしょうか。中高生の感想文のような内容です。同時に買った、松本清張短編集の島田荘司さんらの格調の高い解説と比べてしまった私がいけないのでしょうか。

まだ旧版と比較していないので１００％信用するのは早計だが、全く意味の無い言葉狩りによる改悪をせず、昭和３０年代のままの内容で手軽な文庫化するという今回のポプラ社の方針にはとりあえず拍手を送りたい。あの頃改版時に挿絵画家が変わっている巻もあるようで、例えば本作『少年探偵団』は初代の柳瀬茂だが私が昔買った時は山内秀一だった。そういう意外な楽しみもあってか、このシリーズ売れ行き好調のよう。

この勢いに乗って、乱歩と並ぶ探小の巨人横溝正史の少年物全復刻を是非とも要望する。乱歩と違って正史の少年物はかなり入手難で、山村正夫によって主人公を金田一耕助に書き換えられてしまった作品もある（朝日ソノラマ・角川文庫版）。真に我々が欲するのはオリジナルの装丁とテキスト。販売的にも今ポプラ社が正史を復刻する意味は乱歩以上にある筈だ。先年同社より刊行された『仮面城』『大迷宮』『金色の魔術師』はほとんど大人向けのような素晴らしい解説等を付けながら、語句改変・マンガのようなカバー・挿絵に落胆し購入を控えたファンは多かった。ニーズが多いのだから今度こそポプラ社には期待したい。

最後に、本シリーズ末尾のエッセイの人選はもっと慎重に。喜国雅彦のような古本荒らしが探偵小説に顔を突っ込むのはホントに勘弁してほしい。

１巻の最後に結成された少年探偵団がこの作品では大活躍です。
小林少年の機転に驚かされますが、怪人二十面相の逃走劇も見物です。
この作品には今では差別用語ともとれる表現が使われています。
出版社はできるだけその当時の背景を大事にしたようで作品最後の
注釈でも触れていますが、言葉ひとつとっても自由な表現が許された当時が垣間見れて
懐かしい気分になります。手直しせずに出版したポプラ社に拍手を送りたいです。
乙一氏の子供の感想文のようなあとがきを読めば、彼もまたこの旧版での少年
探偵団シリーズを待ち望んだ１人なのだなということはわかります。
