優等生なんだけど周りからの自分像に、自分自身はちょっとなじめないというような主人公の性格設定は、『その角を曲がれば』『フュージョン』と、わりと似通ったところがあり、物語の大枠の雰囲気も似ている。『その角を曲がれば』では、あの年頃の複雑で微妙な人間関係をたんたんと描き、『フュージョン』はそうした人間関係のキャラをさらにたててメリハリをきかせつつも、設定をすべて生かしきれずに終わっていた。そして『トーキョー･クロスロード』では、『その角を曲がれば』の静かな淡いトーンを生かしつつ、クライマックスに向けてじっくり物語を熟成させ、感動のラストにすべりこむその技は実に見事。ここでさらに進化した濱野ワールドを見せてくれている。設定はだいぶ違うんだけれど、子どもの頃だいすきだった『四年三組のはた』という児童小説を思い出した。

傷つくことは怖い。傷つけることはもっと怖い。
身の内に噴き上がってきそうになる「思い」から、眼をそらし、
身を鎧う「個性」でバリアを張る。
生きにくい季節を生きる術。
振り子のようにいつまでも揺れが止まない心を持て余す栞。
クラスメートとの距離に、時に苛立ち時に安堵する。
大人への道は、自らには茫洋とした道。
青春の只中に在るときには、自分の起ち位置を確信しにくい。
さまざまな感情がいちどきに沸いては、ふっと凪いだように機能しなくなる
融通のきかない季節。

かつての同級生、耕也との再開と破線のように続く関係。
一直線に切り結ぶことのできない絆というものもあるのだ。
自分の人生を切り開きつつある年上の同級生ふたりから、栞は学ぶ。その姿勢を。
相手の気持ちに応えること、一歩踏み出す心の逸り、ときめきを素直に
うけとめた栞が眩しかった。
