三人の行動力と冒険をハラハラドキドキしながら読んだ私たちが大人になったように、
ハチベエ・ハカセ・モーちゃんの三人も大人になりました。
なんと今年で41歳だそうです。
今回のお話は、かつてのクラスメートが真智子が人気占い師となり、
彼女のトラブルに巻き込まれる三人を描きます。

しかし中年になった三人が、
あのころのハツラツとした三人のままでいられるはずもなく、
同時に私たちも子供ではなくなった。
やはり、あの頃のままでの設定には無理があり、
児童文学を大人の読み物にしたような中途半端なぎこちなさを感じます。

しかも最後まで読み進めると、
今回の事件のために三人はどう活躍したのだろうか・・・
ただ泳がせれていただけなのでは・・・ということに気づいてしまい、
三人もただのオヤジになってしまった・・・と妙な切なさがこみあげます。

また三人の活躍を読めるのは嬉しいです。
でもお互いの成長が邪魔をして、どうしようもない葛藤を感じます。

　前作の「ズッコケ中年三人組」の表紙はハチベイ、ハカセ、モーちゃんの小学生姿が夕焼けをバックに黒ベタの影になっていた。今回の表紙は白バックにローマ字タイトルの大書きで三人組の姿は消えている。この表紙デザインの苦慮が“ズッコケ中年三人組”のシリーズ展開の難しさを物語っている。つまり、中年になった三人を文章では表現出来てもビジュアルじゃ難しいってことだ。読者の中に小学生時代の三人のイメージがあるから。
前作は番外編の趣だったけど、今回からは本格的な“中年シリーズ”の幕開けであり、シリーズで続けていくとなると、制約、弱みが浮き彫りになってくる。読者はおとなだし、おとなの世界を描くんだけど、表現はこどもに縛られる、もちろん“小学生編”のイメージに縛られる。そこら辺をどうやって突破していくか、あるいは逆に“小学生編”の資産をどう活かしていくかが今後の著者の腕の見せどころだろう。
　読み手としては自分に照らし合わせて「そうそう、おとなになっても基本はあの頃と変わらないよ」って気分と、「ガキの頃とは違うんだよ」って相反する気持ちが混在する。
　前作が番外編だったのに比べて本作が“小学生編”の従属物じゃないんだよ、って意思を感じたのは、（このあたりの詳しい事情を知りたい読者は、「ズッコケマル秘大作戦」を熟読してほしい-筆者）っていうリンクが数箇所埋め込まれてたこと。これって中年である現世界が「主」でそこから過去を参照するって位置づけだよね。前作は中年の今は延長線上だったので、本作では過去と現在の位置関係の転換が図られている。
　寅さんでも名作と凡作、好みがあるように、シリーズってのはそういう見方があって、その体でいくと本作はイマイチかな。著名な美人女占い師ってのが細木数子やプリンセス・テンコーを思わせて、あまりにリアルに近づきすぎてる。前作の怪盗Xってあたりがズッコケの世界観だと思うんだよね。

2005年に出版された「ズッコケ中年3人組」からの続編。
内容としてはズッコケシリーズを読破した人が思わず「クスッ」となるようなシーンも
含まれてはいるが、やはり物足りなさを感じる。前作はある程度はズッコケ要素がはいっていたが、この作品は皆無に近いだろう。中年でおこりうる健康をテーマにしたらしいが、大体はマコの話で終わったような･･･。一言で言うならば内容が極端に薄い。年のせいもあるかもしれないけど、作者は少年誌が一番あっていると思う。
